We walk up the stairs quietly, and I follow her to her bedroom door. When she reaches the doorway, she reaches for her shoes that are still in my hand.

Before I pass them over, I give her another kiss. It’s slow and passionate and I hope it conveys all the things I hope to be doing with her soon.

“Sweet dreams, Violet.” I take a few backward steps toward my door across the hall.

“Same to you, Brady.” She goes into her room and softly closes the door.

I do the same and enter my room, leaning back on the door once it’s shut behind me. Hopefully now I can get some sleep, though I suspect that even if I do, I’ll be dreaming of the woman across the hall.

Violet

Theo has been begging me to teach him yoga, so Sunday afternoon when Brady returns from training camp, he finds us in the family room practicing downward dog.

I saw him briefly this morning before he left, and I basically ignored his gaze. I know we need to discuss what happened last night, but while being exhausted and slightly hungover early on a Sunday was not the time to have that conversation.

“What’s going on here?” He flops onto the couch and I glance at him. He looks more tired than usual. Training camp seems to be taking a lot out of him.

“Violet’s showing me how she does her yoga. Want to try, Daddy?” Theo falls out of his pose and lands on his side with a giggle.

“Maybe some other time. I’m pretty wiped from camp today. I’ll just watch you guys.”

I get out of my pose and straighten up to go over and help Theo try again. “How did it go?” I try to keep my voice light, but images from last night keep flashing through my mind.

Brady blows out a breath. “Good, I guess. I’m glad it’s a shorter day than normal at least. Found I was pretty distracted through most of it though.”

I look his way as I try to show Theo how to keep his heels pressed to the floor. “Oh? Why’s that?”

He shrugs but gives me a look I swear could incinerate me. “Just had some things running through my mind.Someone.”

I swallow hard. “Gotcha.”

Theo falls out of pose again and rolls over to look up at me from the floor. “This is hard.”

“You’re doing great. It takes practice.” I smile at him.

“Can I go do my Lego set in my room now?” This kid and his Lego addiction, I swear. He always has one set going here in the family room and one in his room.

“Of course. Want me to come help?”

He sits up and shakes his head. “No, I wanna try to do this one by myself.”

A part of me wants to beg him to let me come with him so that I won’t be forced to be alone with Brady, knowing he’ll likely use this opportunity to have the conversation I don’t want to have. But it’s time to put on my big girl panties. Bryce was right when she said something was going to happen. And if I thought that the sexual tension between us would dissipate because he gave me an earth-shattering orgasm last night, I was sorely mistaken.

In fact, the way he’s looking at me now makes me feel as though he wants me more than ever and I’d be lying if I said the same wasn’t true on my end.

I ruffle Theo’s hair. “All right. I’ll come check on you in a bit and see if you’ve changed your mind.”

Unexpectedly, Theo jolts forward and encompasses me in a hug, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Thanks for showing me yoga.”

Slowly, I let my arms come around him and squeeze him back. “You’re welcome.”

I always love the kids I work with, and I always want them to feel that, but there’s something special about my relationship with Theo that’s different than any of the other kids I’ve cared for. I’m going to miss this little guy so much in a couple of months when it’s time for me to move on.

I glance up while Theo’s in my arms and see this expression on Brady’s face that I can’t place. It’s a little like awe mixed with apprehension and I don’t know what to make of it.

Theo rushes off without a clue about the strange vibe in the room.
