“I love you too. Miss you.”

Then she hangs up and Theo holds the phone out to me. His bottom lip is quivering, and my chest squeezes.

I ruffle his hair. “How about we go see if we can find some ice cream before we go for a swim? I think I saw a really cool ice cream shop on the way here.”

Slowly his frown turns into a small smile. “Okay.”

We head out together and I do my best to distract him with fun all day long, but nothing can take the place of his mom.

Later that afternoon, Theo and I are splashing around in the pool. He’s a decent swimmer, though we stay in the shallow end. He’s dared me to see if I can swim from the shallow end to the deep end underwater.

“You don’t think I can do it?” I tickle his sides and he laughs.

“No way. That’s far.”

It is pretty far, but I think I have a shot. “Okay, count me down and let’s see if I can make it there.”

He does, and when he hits one, I drop underwater and push off the wall, kicking my legs and using my arms to move as fast as possible. My eyes are open, and after a bit, I see the wall of the deep end approach. Almost there. Just a few more kicks.

When I touch the wall with my hand, I come up out of the water and gulp some air.

“Yay!” Theo cheers from the other end of the pool. “Do it again.”

Holding on to the side, I turn to face him. “Again?” I call, exhausted.

He nods a bunch of times.

“Okay, count me down.”

“Three, two, one!”

I slip underwater again and use the wall as leverage to get as far out as I can. It’s harder than the last time and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it, but I do. When my hand touches the wall, I pop up out of the water with a cheer, then catch my breath.

The first thing I notice is a set of feet directly in front of me. When I look up, I have to shield my eyes against the sun. It’s Brady.

“Thought I’d join you guys.”

“Daddy!”

While Theo rushes over to the stairs to greet his dad, Brady gives me the once-over, pausing briefly on my sky-blue bikini top. I do the same to him, taking in his ripped physique in his swim trunks.

Before I say anything and before Theo has even made it to his dad, a woman wearing a black bikini comes up from behind him. “Brady Banks?”

He turns at his name.

“Oh my god, I knew it was you! I told my friend I was right.”

Before he can do or say anything, she wraps her swimsuit-clad body around him and hugs him. Theo comes to an abrupt halt, water trickling off his body to the concrete.

To his credit, Brady doesn’t return her hug, but it does nothing to soothe the sour feeling in my stomach at the vision of this scantily clad woman all over the man I’m sleeping with. Brady pulls away and sort of sets her back by her shoulders.

“I love you so much! You’re the best player in the league.”

He gives her a small smile and lets his arms drop from her shoulders. “Thanks, I appreciate that.”

“We’re going to the game tomorrow.” She gestures to a lounger where a woman, who I assume is the other half of the “we,” gives a small wave.

“Wonderful. I appreciate the support.” He nods and glances at Theo. “I’m just going to have a swim with my son, but it was great to meet you.”
