The woman gives Theo a cursory glance, then looks at Brady with hearts in her eyes. “Maybe once your little guy is in bed, we can meet up or something? I can give you my room number, or you can tell me yours…” She shifts her hip out in a way I imagine is supposed to be alluring, but it comes off more as desperation in my opinion.

Brady’s countenance shifts in a split second. Gone is the patient smile and relaxed posture, and in its place is a face void of emotion and a rigid posture. “It was good to meet you.” Then he turns his back to her, picks up Theo, and walks over to the pool stairs.

The urge to pump my fist and cheer is strong, but I resist.

The woman frowns and walks back to her friend in a sulk.

“That was… interesting,” I say when Brady walks over to me in the water.

Brady says nothing, but his lips form a thin line.

“Daddy, want to play Marco Polo with me and Violet?”

He looks at his son, who’s still in his arms, and he’s back to being the Brady I know. “As long as I’m not it.”

I cluck my tongue at him. “Those are the rules, I’m afraid.”

Brady chuckles. “All right. I’ll give you a five-second head start.”

Theo yelps and rushes toward the far side of the shallow end. Brady winks at me before closing his eyes and starting his countdown.

The wink gives me flutters in my belly, but I run away from that feeling the same way I’m running away from Brady right now.

After the pool, the three of us come up to the room to shower, order room service for dinner, and watch a movie. Theo falls asleep halfway through. Once the credits are rolling, I carry him into his room, gently lay him down, and pull the covers over him.

Violet’s lounging on the couch when I come back out to the living area.

“I think all that time in the water really tired him out. Maybe I should get a pool at home.” I laugh.

She chuckles as I sit on the opposite side of the couch, then I pull her feet onto my lap to massage them. A moan of appreciation leaves her lips as I dig my thumb into the ball of her foot.

“If football doesn’t carry you far, you can give foot massages,” she says, resting her head on the armrest of the couch and closing her eyes.

“It’s entirely self-serving. I’ve been thinking of getting my hands on you since I saw you in that bikini earlier.”

She opens her eyes and arches an eyebrow. “Is that right?”

I nod slowly. “I had to think about my parents having sex so I wouldn’t get a hard-on.”

Violet laughs hard, her whole body shaking. “I feel like maybe I’m supposed to apologize.”

“Not necessary. It was worth the mental torment to keep myself in check.” I set her foot down on my lap and pick up the other one to massage.

“There were lots of bikinis around the pool today. Did you have to think about your parents’ sex life the whole time we were down there?”

I tilt my head with a confused expression. “Weird. I didn’t even notice any other bikinis.”

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, right. I’m sure you noticed the one pressed up against you when you arrived.”

Irritation flares my nostrils at the mention of the woman who tried to pick me up in front of Theo. “Her attention wasn’t welcome.”

Violet huffs. “She sure made it known that your attention was very welcome to her.”

I can’t help the shit-eating grin that’s spreading across my face. “You’re jealous?”
