“I’m going to get the cake. Theo hasn’t seen it yet. I can’t wait to show him.”

Both women smile at me, but it’s the way they smile at me that makes me pause.

“What? Why are you both looking at me that way?”

“No reason,” Shayna says.

“Just that you look like a woman in love, that’s all.” Bryce shrugs.

My mouth falls open. “Bite your tongue.”

Then I race into the house as if the devil is on my heels.

Brady

Imake my way over to where my mom is chatting up Violet, but before I get there, Violet takes off toward the house.

My mom must really be on a roll then. Great.

“Having a good time?” I ask her once I reach her.

“The best! It’s always great to see my grandson so happy.” She gestures behind me and I turn to stand beside her so we can watch as Theo jumps around like a madman inside the jumping castle, laughing the whole time.

“Agreed.” I take a pull off my beer.

“Violet really did a great job with the party. I’m impressed.”

I look around at all the effort she put in. Yes, she’s on my payroll, but I know she didn’t do any of this for a paycheck. She did this because she cares about Theo. “Yeah, she worked hard on it.”

“Mmmhmm.”

I’m content to stand there for a moment and watch all the kids, but I should know better than to assume my mom will stop there.

“So… is the sex good?”

I groan, and my head tilts back so I’m staring at the sky. “How is it possible that I’m not in therapy?”

She laughs.

I straighten and look at her. “What are you even talking about?”

My mom gives me a disappointed look. “Don’t try to deny it. I’m not an idiot.”

“What does that mean?” I scowl.

“The chemistry between you two is palpable. And no one looks at each other the way you two do if they aren’t fucking.” She picks up a handful of goldfish crackers and eats them.

“All right, tone it down. We’re at a kid’s birthday party.”

She shrugs. “Tell me I’m wrong.”

I debate doing that for half a second, but it will do no good. My mom is insightful and persistent.

“We are. But it’s nothing serious, so don’t give me that look,” I say and point at her when she practically gets heart eyes as though she’s going to marry me off. “We’ve talked about it and neither of us wants it to be anything serious. We’re just acting on our attraction to one another and when it’s done, it’s done.”

My mom shakes her head. “She’s drinking the same idiot water as you?”
