“Excuse me?”

“You don’t really think that you don’t have feelings for her, do you, Brady?”

I take a pull from my beer. “I told you. It’s casual.”

She frowns. “There’s nothing casual about the way you look at her. Especially when she’s with Theo.”

I hate the way her words resonate with me. I open my mouth to defend myself but find I can’t. Thank God my dad chooses that moment to interrupt us.

My mom turns and looks at him proudly. “Brady and Violet are sleeping together.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Mom?”

“I didn’t say fucking,” she says, dead serious as if I should thank her.

“This has to be the only family that gives updates to each other about their sex lives.”

“You finally told her, huh?” He wraps his arm around my mom, but she leans away from him and looks between the two of us.

“Wait. Jasper, you already knew?”

My dad shrugs. “I knew the day she first showed up here.”

She swings around to look at me. “You slept with her on her first day?”

My dad’s head whips in my direction with an “oh shit” expression. Clearly, he did as I asked and kept the fact that I’d slept with Violet before she was Theo’s nanny to himself. And now he’s gonna be in the doghouse because of it.

My phone vibrates in my back pocket, and I pull it out to see that it’s Hannah. “I’m gonna leave you to explain, Dad. Have fun.”

I don’t waste any time answering the call in case either of my parents tries to pull me back in to run interference. “Hey, Hannah. How are you?” It’s clear right away that she’s been crying. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m just sad I can’t be there for Theo’s birthday. It’s hitting me harder than I expected.”

I frown and walk more to the side where she won’t have to overhear the party. “I’m sorry. Give me a second, he’s in the bouncy castle. Let me get him for you.”

It takes me a minute to get Theo’s attention among all the jumping kids, but I do, and when I tell him his mom is on the phone, he immediately bounces over to me.

“Let’s take the call away from everyone so you can hear, okay?” I say.

He nods and runs closer to the house, not waiting for me.

“Here you go.” I hand him the phone.

“Hi, Mommy!”

“Happy birthday, little man!”

“Mommy, you should see my party. Everything is Lego!”

“Oh wow. Well maybe your dad can send me some pictures later.”

Theo looks up at me over the phone, and I nod. “He says he will.”

“Wonderful. So what have you been doing all day so far?”

They chat for a minute or two while Theo tells her all about the fun he’s having at his birthday party, then Hannah says she has to go.

“Do you have to go already, Mommy?” Theo whines.
