And my heart pumped full of relief.

Thank God and all the angels in heaven!

It was Aloysius. He’d be able to call a lawyer for me to help get out me of this mess.

The officer opened the door, pulled me out, and uncuffed me. There was only one other officer standing nearby as most of the cops had already set off for the station or were still inside the convention hall. “Don’t worry about him,” said the officer to Aloysius. “He’s my partner and he’ll keep quiet about this.”

“How did you find me, Aloysius?”

“We have contacts in the police force.” His voice was low as he quickly ushered me away. “Lorenzo found out that you’d gone out without protection, and we came to the city center to search for you. I was nearby when the officer saw your surname was Marchiano from your credit cards and driver’s license in your wallet. He gave me a call, and I came straight away.”

The officer had searched my backpack, and my wallet was in there with my keys and phone. I hadn’t thought about that—thank God he’d seen my name was Marchiano and called Aloysius.

I climbed into Aloysius’s car and slumped back against the seat. “This day has turned into a disaster,” I groaned, sinking my face into my hands.

“I’ll have you home soon,” reassured Aloysius. As he started the ignition, he spoke into his cell phone. “Call off the search. I’ve got her. I’m bringing her home now.”

As I listened to the ensuing conversation, I realized he was talking to Lorenzo, and it was obvious my husband was absolutely furious—especially when Aloysius mentioned that I’d been arrested.

CHAPTER 38

LORENZO

Aloysius had called to let me know that he had Anni. He was bringing her home, and I was heading back to the mansion at the same time.

As I approached the gates, I saw Marco’s car heading toward the gates too.

Great. He’d obviously already heard what had happened. Although I would have informed him about today’s events, I would have preferred to have had things out with Anni first.

We both parked in the drive and got out of our vehicles.

“I hear your wife got herself arrested,” he gritted out. I could tell he was pissed.

“I’ve got it under control.”

“You obviously don’t haveherunder control,” he snapped.

“Nobody questioned her and the Feds got nowhere near her.”

“When is she getting back?”“Aloysius is about twenty minutes behind me.”

We went in through the front door and as I walked in, I nearly tripped over the fucking cat who was gazing at himself in the hallway’s full-length mirror. The dumb animal was utterly vain and loved to look at himself.

Then I caught sight of him kissing himself in the mirror. I swear the fucking creature would marry himself if he could.

The cat flicked his cold blue eyes to me and looked at me in disdain as if I had disturbed him in his self-admiration session.

“That cat always looks at me like he wants to kill me,” I muttered as we made our way to my study. “When I look at him, it’s like looking straight into the eyes of a killer.”

“Don’t be such a fucking wimp, Lorenzo,” Marco barked at me.

“I’m a Made Man—I know a killer instinct when I see one.”

“Jesus Christ, Lorenzo. I don’t know if it’s the cat, your new wife, or a combination of them both, but you seriously need to get a fucking grip. It’s just an animal.” Marco clearly wasn’t feeling in an empathetic mood.

“It was your idea that I marry the girl in the first place. Her cat, not to mention her whole family, are bat-shit crazy.”

I poured us both a glass of whiskey as we waited impatiently for Aloysius and Anni to arrive.
