Her mouth drops open. “What?”

“Yeah, your grandpa’s gift to us.”

She rolls her lips inward. “Really?”

“He says that my tiny cabin is no place to raise a family.”

We’ve talked briefly about kids and with how loose we play with protection it’s bound to happen. And I think we’ve just been waiting for the happy news.

She climbs out slowly, the bottom of her dress draped over her arm. The crisp white matching the falling snow. She stops to take it all in.

A great front porch— perfect for haircuts. She’s become my regular groomer and it almost always ends the same way the first one did.

“It’s ours?” she asks, her eyes wide, scanning the entire place.

“All four bedrooms, all gourmet kitchen, and all three baths. It’s all ours, sweetheart.” I wrap my arms around her as I watch goosebumps rise on her skin. I kiss her neck, her hair in a pile of curls on her head. “What do you think?”

“I think it’s beautiful.”

I step in front of her. “You’re beautiful. This is home.”

“And you’re not going anywhere?” she asks, her eyes filling with tears.

“Never. Well, I do have to go to work, but I’ll always come home to you.” I cup her jaw. “I love you, Peri. I’m sorry it took me so long to figure my shit out, but I’ll spend the rest of our lives making sure you know how much I want to be by your side.”

“My grandpa told me that you came to him that day you came into my salon. He said that he wondered if you’d ever realize what you had in front of you, and he could see what you meant to me long before I ever could. He wants us to be happy.”

“I want us to be happy.”

She sighs. “I’m so happy, Orion. Happier than I’ve been in a long time.”

“And we’re going to stay that way.”

“So… the lodge?”

“We have reservations, but there is a bed, kitchen table, fully stocked kitchen, and enough food to keep us fed for a week in there.”

She reaches for my hand and pulls me toward the door. “Call the lodge and tell them we’re not coming.”

“Oh, we’re both coming, sweetheart.”

She rolls those four-leaf clover eyes. “You know what I mean, but I like where your head is.”

I might have wanted a makeover, but in the end, changing the outside isn’t what matters. It’s what’s on the inside that truly makes a person happy.

I carry my bride into the house, and she giggles.

“I love you.”

“Love you, too, sweetheart.”
