“She’s a fucking rich bitch, she can afford to pay what I asked,” he spits angrily.

“You’re right, and this is a gesture of goodwill,” Albert tells him, throwing a neatly banded wad of cash onto his lap. “Leon and Max will assume this matter is settled. If you approach Jolene or attempt to blackmail her again, they won’t be so understanding.”

“If they come for me, they’ll start a war,” he spits, grinning.

“Which they are prepared to do. Now, sweet pea, untangle yourself from him. Albert needs to make sure he has the message,” I say.

Rosey holds out her hand, and I take it, pulling her to me. She takes my arms and wraps them around her, pressing her back to my front and watching as Albert lays into the gang member. She occasionally pushes back with her arse, and I swear she’s turned on by the violence.

I remember Meli is in the kitchen and look back over my shoulder to find her watching from the doorway. But her eyes aren’t on the bloody mess that is Dylan. Instead, they’re watching me and Rosey. When she catches me looking at her, she folds her arms over her chest and forces a smile. “I say we kill him,” Rosey announces.

“Good job I’m the boss,” I say. “Put your gun away. He lives.”

“And if he talks?”

“He won’t.”

When it looks like the dick is half dead, Albert wipes his hands on his trousers. “That should do it.”

Meli doesn’t wait a second longer before she leaves. “I think she’s mad I brought her,” whispers Rosey.

We all head out and down the stairs. Meli is halfway across the car park. I run to catch up with her. “You can’t be out here on your own,” I snap. My car pulls in, and she stops. “I’ll take you both home.”

“I can walk,” hisses Meli, and I’m not sure why she’s suddenly so mad.

“Why is she even here?” I ask, glaring at Rosey.

“I didn’t want to stand out. No one goes to a party alone.”

“It wasn’t part of the plan, Red.”

“Speaking of plans, when did you plan on telling me about Jolene dropping us in the shit with her little confession?” asks Rosey.

“No names were mentioned. You didn’t need to know.”

“Like fuck I didn’t. She talked about a hitwoman.”

“And you think you’re the only one?” I scoff.

“You want me to go after Meli?” Albert asks, and I turn to where Meli is storming off.

“No, I’ll fix this. Take Rosey home and remind her how we do business,” I snap, marching off after Meli.

“Why are you mad?” I ask after a few minutes of us speed walking in silence.

“Mav is going to lose his mind when I tell him about tonight.”

“I know. I’ll explain everything.”

“What did that guy do to deserve that?” she asks.

“It doesn’t matter.”

She spins to face me, and we both stop. “It matters to me. If I’m going to witness the beating of a man I helped lure into that place, I want to know what he did.”

“Rosey shouldn’t have taken you along. It won’t happen again.” We start walking, but this time slower. “I have a bar right around the corner from here. Can I get you a drink to apologise?”

“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather take Rosey?” she asks, sounding bitter. It pulls a smile from me—maybe she likes me more than she wants to admit.
