“If I wanted to take Rosey, she’d be here instead.”

Thankfully, the bar is quiet, with only a few couples talking quietly while the soft music plays a soulful tune. Meli takes a seat by the window, and I order us each a drink and join her. “This isn’t like your other bars,” she points out.

“It’s on the border to E15’s streets. I don’t put much into it because it’ll attract too much attention. I bought it many years ago, before the kids took the streets, but it’s one of the first bars I purchased, so I don’t want to let it go.”

She shrugs out of her jacket and places it on the back of her seat. I can’t avoid staring at the lace top she’s wearing. It’s practically underwear, and if she was mine, she’d definitely not be wearing it out of the bedroom. “You didn’t like me touching Rosey,” I state. It takes her by surprise, and her brow furrows while she thinks carefully of an answer that won’t give her true feelings away.

“Why would I care?” I’m disappointed she didn’t find a better comeback.

“You looked annoyed.”

“I was annoyed at the situation she’d put me in.”

“So, seeing her in my arms didn’t bother you?” She shakes her head and takes a sip of her drink. “Okay.”

“Okay?” she repeats.

“If you have no objection . . .”

“I don’t,” she insists. “Go for it.”

“I have a question.”

“I’m all ears.”

“If I was to ask Rosey on a date, what sort of thing is she into?”

Meli’s eyes blaze with jealousy, but she forces a smile. “Erm, I’m not sure. She’s never really been asked on a date before.”

I laugh. “I don’t believe that. She’s stunning.”

Meli inhales sharply. “Maybe dinner and a few drinks,” she suggests, ignoring my compliment.

“As a woman, what’s your ideal date?”

She thinks, then asks, “No limits or reasonable date ideas?”

I grin. “Try both.”

“Okay, reasonable date would be an outdoor movie and dinner somewhere nice. Not a bar kind of meal, but a real restaurant with chandeliers and candles.”

I raise my eyebrows. “That’s reasonable?” I tease.

“No limits would be a surprise flight to somewhere romantic, maybe Paris, dinner in the Eiffel Tower, followed by a night in an expensive hotel.”

“A night?” I repeat, laughing again. “Is this a first date?”

She presses her lips together, holding back her smile. “I guess it depends on who the date is with.”

“If he was a real gentleman, he wouldn’t book a hotel for the first date. It would be too presumptuous.”

“I just love the thought of silk sheets, a room overlooking the city.” She closes her eyes. “A walk-in shower big enough for two.” Her eyes shoot open again, like she didn’t mean to say it out loud, and she blushes.

Disappointment seeps in. I can’t give her that. Romance and cosy nights in aren’t my thing. “You’ve really thought about it.”

“What about you?”

“Men don’t dream of dates. They mainly think about the rewards.”
