“Remains to be seen. Next time I hire you to do a job, you do it quick and clean, then get the fuck out of there.”

She gives a bored sigh, and Albert glances my way, probably wondering why I haven’t killed her on the spot. “Have you transferred the money?” she asks.

“Yes. Now, leave. You’re putting me in a bad mood.”

“Do you think she’s unhinged?” Tommy asks as we enter The Perished Riders clubhouse later. We often drop by to check in on business since we joined alliance with the club a couple of years ago.

“Who?”

“Rosey.”

I groan. “Why are we still thinking about Red, brother? Don’t be getting no ideas there. She’s off the scale crazy.”

“I wasn’t,” he says a little too quickly. “Just wondering is all. She’s not scared of you, that’s for sure.”

I narrow my eyes, and he wilts. “She just hides it well, unlike you.”

I shake hands with Maverick, the President of the club. “Busy in here tonight,” I comment, looking around the packed-out bar of his clubhouse. I like Mav and his strong family values, it’s what drew me to him. When he took over the club from his dad, he told me he was changing it, and he’s done just that. There’s still an undertone of criminal activity, but to the rest of London, he looks like he’s cleaned the place up and he’s putting good back into the community. I like that he doesn’t flaunt his power. He doesn’t need to—neither of us do. We have the respect of the locals, and we’re on good terms with all the important people who matter.

“Yeah, a brother got released. It’s a big day.”

“You want us to go?” I ask.

He shakes his head, laughing. “Man, you know you’re more like one of the brothers. We call him Viking. You’ll see why when he comes down from his room. His first priority was the club whores, of course. He’s been away for ten years.”

“Shit, assault?”

“Yeah. Wrongly.” I laugh because all guys who end up inside plead innocence. Mav laughs too. “Long story,” he adds.

Rosey passes us, winking at me. “See, not scared,” whispers Tommy, nudging our shoulders together.

“I’ve seen that look in her eye before,” Mav mutters. “Isn’t she doing some work for you?” All club members, including the women, run extra work by him, so it makes sense he knows about our arrangement.

“She’s a pain in my arse,” I say, and Mav laughs. “No respect, no discipline. She just rocks up when she feels like it with a half-hearted plan. How the fuck she’s gotten away with it for so long is beyond me.”

“She’s a wild child,” says Mav, nodding. “She always was.”

“You think my little brother can handle her?” I ask, slapping Tommy on the back.

Mav laughs harder. “Not a chance, but I’d pay to see it play out.”

MELI

“Tom Hardy would not be good in bed,” Rosey argues. She’s my closest friend, so I can forgive her for negative thoughts towards my future husband.

“Of course he would. Have you not seen his films?” I flick through Tom’s pictures on my phone.

“Acting and actually doing are very different things. Anyway, why fantasise about a man you’ll never meet? At least set your sights on someone you can touch. If it’s violence and danger you want, look around, you’re in an MC clubhouse.”

I scan the room. I’ve known most of these men my entire life, and maybe that’s the problem. My dad was once the club president, and now, that title has been passed down to my older brother. He’s doing a much better job. “Around here, I’d be lucky to find anyone even half decent.”

“At least these men are obtainable, so you can make it less of a fantasy and more a reality. It’s been ages since you put yourself out there, Meli.”

I scoff. “Sorry, ‘Miss I go on a date every night’. Take your own advice.”

“I’m out most nights,” she argues.

“Killing and dating are not the same.” Her career choice is not a nine-to-five office role. She always was a little crazy, so becoming a hitwoman wasn’t a surprise to any of us.
