She rolls her eyes. “I’m not interested in dating. Men are useless these days. I don’t remember the last time I was swept off my feet. Actually, I do . . . it was never.”

My mind wanders to Grim, the last man to sweep me off my feet, and that familiar ache returns to my chest. Not because I miss him, I honestly don’t, but the pain I caused my sister was unforgivable, and although she’s moved forward, and she and Grim are very happy together, I haven’t forgiven myself so easily. It was a stupid little affair that got out of hand, and though we never did anything behind Hadley’s back, we kept it a secret from her. She was so hurt after she found out, and she still doesn’t quite look at me the same way, despite us being twins. I broke our bond over a man, and I hate myself for it.

“Earth to Meli,” says Rosey, waving her hand in front of my face. “Are we going or not?”

“My god, have you girls seen this?” asks Gracie, holding her mobile phone in front of us. I take it from her and stare at the screen. It shows a crowd of people, and then it focusses on a body, lifeless on the ground.

“Christ, Gracie, what am I watching?” I ask, holding the phone farther away from my face.

“A guy jumped off Potters nightclub last night. It’s all over social media,” she replies.

I stare closer, wincing. “That’s messed up.”

Rosey doesn’t seem interested, and my eyes widen. I wait for Gracie to move away before I turn on her. “That was you?” I accuse.

“Are we going out or not, because my heels already hurt and we haven’t left.”

“Why did you do that? I mean . . .” I can’t find my words. “So, you just pushed him?”

“Meli, I can’t discuss that crap with you. It’s my job, move on.”

“He probably had a wife and kids.”

“No kids. Luckily.”

“His wife must be devastated.”

She sighs impatiently. “For someone who grew up in this MC, you’re so fucking naïve.” Her words sting, reminding me of my dad and his cruel comments. She realises the second she says them and covers her mouth. “Sorry. I didn’t mean anything by that. Fuck. Can we just go and get drunk, please? We’re good at that part.”

I grab my bag. “Fine, but we’re not going to Potters.” She laughs at my response.

“Where are you going?” asks Mav, taking my arm and pulling me back to him.

“Out.”

“Where?”

I groan. “I’m a grown-up, Mav. We can’t keep having this conversation.”

“Let her go,” says Hadley as she passes us. “She’s an adult, and she needs to find herself a man.”

Mav releases me, giving me a knowing look. I don’t think Hadley means it in a bad way, but she often drops comments like that, reminding me I’m not quite forgiven. Or maybe she just can’t settle until I’ve shown I’ve moved on.

“Go to the club,” says Arthur, handing me a pass. His fingers brush mine, and I get a familiar tingle in my stomach. Arthur flirts all the time. I used to think he was doing it to annoy Mav and Grim, but he’s worse now than ever. If he knew my secrets, he wouldn’t waste his time.

“Thanks,” says Rosey, snatching the card from me and stuffing it in her bag.

Arthur shakes his head in annoyance and hands me a second pass. “Maybe I’ll see you there later.” His words are laced with promise, and I give a weak smile. Men like Arthur Taylor don’t date women like me. Theyusewomen like me, and I don’t want to be the reason Mav and him fall out.

As we step outside, Rosey grins. “He flirts with you.”

“He flirts with loads of women. Have you seen him at the club? He’s got ‘bad guy’ written all over him. Besides, Mav would kill him.”

“Well, if you’re not going there, I might.” She winks and walks ahead, waving her hand at a passing cab.

I crumple the card in my hand. Rosey fits with Arthur, and she’d be perfect with him, so I don’t know why that thought bothers me.
