“Fuck, Meli, don’t throw yourself over the edge. Mav would kill me.”

I grin. “He’d want to know what you were doing up on the roof with his sister for a start.”

He laughs, taking a step back and moving to stand in front of me. He gently picks up my bare foot and begins to rub it. I close my eyes as he works the ache away with his skilful fingers. “I’d tell him you were peeing on my roof.”

“And your reason as to why I ended up over the edge?” I ask.

“I’d say you’d had enough of the monsters in your head and felt too sad to carry on.”

His words pull at my heart, and my eyes meet his. He knows. He knows I’m sad. “What monsters?” I whisper.

He takes my other foot and gives it the same treatment. It crosses my mind he could tip me over the edge without a second thought, yet I’m not even a little nervous, and I realise I trust him. “The ones that visit you at night. That steal your good dreams and remind you of all the bad times. The times he didn’t protect you when he should have.” My eyes fill with tears and I frown, unsure where they’ve come from. He doesn’t know the truth, only close family do, so how the hell did he get it so accurate?

“What would be your reason to jump?” I ask, changing the subject and blinking to clear my eyes.

He ponders my question. “To find peace.”

“Peace from what?”

He smiles sadly. “We all have monsters, Meli.”

I inhale sharply, hating the way our talk has turned so dark. I pull my foot from his hand, jump down off the wall, and stand in front of him. “You know what you need?” I ask, swooping down to pick up my bag and shoes. “A good woman to distract you. Where did Rosey go?” I brush past him and head for the exit, not waiting to see if he follows.

ARTHUR

Meli’s definitely giving me mixed signals. One second, she’s watching me from across the room, and I swear it’s longingly. And the next, she’s pushing me towards Rosey. And Rosey is making it very apparent I’m on her radar. I can’t decide if that’s a turn-on or not.

I step back into the VIP area, and Rosey holds up a drink for me. I head over, occasionally being stopped on the way. “You don’t look like the type to dance?” She says it more like a question.

I smirk. “No, I don’t dance.”

She sips her drink. “No, I imagine you have people for that. Rumour has it you have a secret room back there.” She nods her head in the direction of doors that do indeed lead to private rooms.

“For dancing?”

She laughs. “You tell me. I imagine you have women back there tied to your bed.” She runs my tie through her fingers, and I picture the way she was with her last victim. I watched the CCTV images of when she seduced Jeremy Hall, right before I deleted them. I can’t ignore my reaction to her—she definitely has some kind of bewitching skill.

“Is that a fantasy, Red?” She doesn’t blush. She never does. Not like Meli.

“Maybe.” She smirks before downing the rest of her drink.

I indicate for Marcus to get her another, which he does. “The private rooms are for various things,” I tell her. “Meetings, impressing important people—”

“Important people you have sex with?” I smirk. She’s too forward, and I never have to guess what’s on her mind because she tells me. “I’d like to see the rooms.”

Meli joins us, her cheeks flushed from too much alcohol and dancing. “My feet are killing me,” she tells Rosey. “Can we go?”

Rosey narrows her eyes, trying to communicate a message to her friend that I suspect involves me. “I just got a new drink.”

Meli rolls her eyes, and when she remains standing by us, Rosey looks more irritated. I grab Meli by the waist, pulling her to me, and she lets out a surprised squeal. I lift her onto the bar and again take her foot in my hands and begin rubbing. Rosey watches the interaction with curiosity.

“Arthur was just telling me about his private rooms over there,” Rosey says, nodding in the general direction.

“You have private rooms?” asks Meli.

“They’re occupied right now,” I say, swapping to Meli’s other foot. She rests her hands behind her and lets her head fall back in pleasure. I don’t think she realises how sexy she looks. She has the attention of men queuing at the bar, and I’ve never wanted to blind a group of people as much as I do right now.

“Maybe our next meeting could be in one,” Rosey suggests.
