“We witnessed a murder, of course, we did,” says Rosey, back to smirking again.

“Okay, start from the fucking beginning because I’m getting a headache,” I growl.

“Probably the late nights,” Meli mutters.

“Or maybe it’s the fact I’m getting calls at five in the morning to tell me you’d got yourself into a mess,” I snarl.

“Take it easy,” Grim warns, and I resent the way he’s protecting her. That’s my job.

Mav notices and holds his hands up. “Let’s all take a minute to think.”

“What are we gonna tell Jolene?” mutters Albert, and we all turn our attention to him. “She’ll come for us. It’s the perfect excuse.”

“We don’t tell her,” snaps Meli. “She doesn’t get to know everything.”

“I think she’ll guess when the word gets out,” Albert replies.

“You’ve shortened the deadline by hours,” Mav adds. “It was a stupid fucking move that, as usual, wasn’t thought through.”

“What were we supposed to do, let them kill us?” Meli demands to know. “Because they would have if it hadn’t been for Rosey.”

“You never should have gone,” I yell angrily.

Meli stands, rolling her eyes. “How dare you lecture me when you turn up here stinking of her cheap perfume!” She leaves, slamming the door. I bite my lip and clench my fists to stop me chasing her down.

“She needs sleep,” Grim explains.

“And you’d know, would you?” I snap.

Grim smirks. “Apparently, better than you.”

“I’m locking the club down,” Mav says before I can reply. “Anyone you need to keep safe, send them here.”

“Albert.” I look at him, and he shrugs. He looks exhausted. “I can’t do this until I know you, Tommy, and Charlie are safe. We need to find Ma before they hurt her.” Albert agrees. “Did you give statements to the police?” I ask Rosey.

She shakes her head. “We’ve got to call into the station at ten.”

I nod, standing to pace. “Okay, so what if we can somehow tie Jolene into this?” I suggest.

“I’m listening,” Mav replies.

“That’s it,” I say. “That’s all I have so far.”

“What if I said something in my statement? I could say it like I don’t think it’s important, but when they hear it, it’ll make them suspect her.”

“Her husband’s murder,” says Albert, suddenly sitting straighter. “You were the only one on that rooftop. You’d know details no one else could. Could you give something up that’ll make them suspicious?”

Rosey nods. “Maybe. I’ll have a think.”

“We’re still overlooking a vital part of this whole thing,” says Grim. “Jolene has a price on your head, Albert, and on Meli’s. That doesn’t go away because she gets banged up. We still need to get that called off.”

“We didn’t forget, but thanks to Charlie’s Angels, we’ve got to rethink the whole fucking plan,” says Maverick, glaring at Rosey.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

MELI

I stir when the bed dips. Arthur gently brushes hair from my eyes and smiles. “You have to be at the police station in an hour, and Rosey needs to talk to you first.”
