Danny shoves me hard, and I fall onto Rosey. He grabs his brother and pulls him flat to the floor. Rosey wipes the bloody bottle neck where she held it, then passes it to Danny, who automatically takes it without thinking. He frowns, placing it on the ground, then he grabs the blanket again and holds it to his brother’s throat. That’s when I realise she’s just put his prints on the glass.

Rosey takes me by the hand and leads me off the rooftop, slamming the fire exit door and bolting it shut. “Now what?” I ask, my heart still banging hard in my chest.

“Now, we act.” She pulls out her phone and dials for the police as we rush down the stairs. “Hello, I need the police! I need help,” she screams, alarming me. “Please help us! He tried to kill us!” She uses the bar sink to wash her hands before running her eyes over me to check for blood. “There’s some on your neck where he grabbed you. We’ll leave that. Tell them everything that happened, swapping Danny for me in the bottle attack.” I nod, glancing at the windows as blue lights shine through. “Showtime,” she whispers, running for the door and busting out. I follow her lead, looking panicked and terrified. “He’s up there,” yells Rosey. “He killed his brother. They’re on the roof.”

The female police officer grabs her by the shoulders. “It’s okay, you’re safe now. Take a breath and tell us what happened.”

“It’s my fault,” I sniffle. “I made her come on a date with me. The guy’s a nutter.”

“They started arguing, and he just stuck it right in his neck,” Rosey continues. “Oh god, I think he killed him. We made a run for it and locked him on the rooftop.” Police officers rush through the bar and towards the roof garden.

The buzzing of my mobile across the bedside table wakes me. I grab it and head out the room, trying not to wake Jolene. “Mav?”

“Get to the club. We have a situation.”

“Is Meli okay?” I ask, my heart beating faster at the thought this is to do with her.

“You might want to kill her before I do.” He disconnects, and I frown. I go back into the bedroom and find Jolene’s naked form still in the same position. I dress quietly and leave.

When I get to the clubhouse, I go straight to Maverick’s office, where he, Grim, Rosey, Albert, and Meli are waiting. Meli is splattered in blood, and the minute she sees me, she rushes into my arms. She buries her nose against my chest, then pulls back just as quickly. “You smell of her,” she murmurs, frowning.

Before I can answer, Mav stands. “Thelma and Louise here, went on a mission tonight.”

“Relax,” says Rosey, smirking.

Mav slams his hands on the table, and her smirk vanishes. “Don’t fucking tell me to relax, Rosey. I’ve had it with you turning rogue on this club.” She sits straighter. “You make up the rules and you don’t give a crap about the rest of us.”

“That’s not fair,” she argues. “I did this for everyone else.”

“You just took it upon yourself,” snaps Grim. “And the worst thing is, you put Meli in danger.”

Meli shakes her head, pulling her hurt gaze from me as she sits back down. “I made her come with me.”

“What happened?” I ask, taking the empty seat beside Meli. I don’t miss the way she turns slightly away from me.

“We went on a date with the Palmer brothers,” she mutters.

“Didn’t you get my message?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I didn’t listen to it until after.”

“What message?” asks Mav.

“Telling her not to make a date with Danny. Jolene said something about them, and it made me think she knew they were going to meet up, like it was a set-up.”

“Great. So, you ignored warnings, you lied to me about when it was taking place, and you just dealt with them yourselves,” Mav summarises.

“Are you okay?” I ask. “Did either of you get hurt?”

“Curtis is dead, and Danny was arrested for it,” says Rosey.

“Danny killed his brother?”

“That’s what we told the police,” Meli says.

I pinch the bridge of my nose, giving me a second to process the information. “You spoke to the police?”
