I nod, wiping my eyes. “Yes, she pushed him off a rooftop. I thought they were just trying to scare us because we were up on the roof.” They exchange a look, and I gasp. “Oh god, is it true?” They don’t reply, instead going back to scribbling down some notes. “If she did, is it possible that . . . Danny said she . . .” I sniffle, and they both wait for me to finish. “She killed her brothers. She hired Danny and Curtis to kill them.”

“Mrs. Hall’s brothers were reported missing, not dead,” the officer says.

“Oh good, because when he started reeling off details, I got scared.”

“Details?” they repeat together.

I nod. “Yes. He said they put them in acid in a warehouse.” I bite my lip like I’m thinking hard. “Tarrant Street, I think he said. Rosey just laughed at him. We thought he was just trying to scare us some more.”

One of the officers closes his notepad. “Thank you, you’ve been very helpful.”

The other officer taps his pen against his lips thoughtfully. “Just one last thing. Mr. Palmer said it was your friend who put that bottle in his brother’s neck. Why would he say that?”

I frown. “We were fucking terrified,” I snap. “Rosey is many things, but she’s not a killer. Christ, we just went on a date and ended up in hell. I should imagine he’s saying all kinds of things to get himself out of this.”

The officer nods. “Okay. Thanks. We’ll be in touch.”

ARTHUR

I brace myself when I spot the police car pulling into the club’s car park below. Albert’s already been to mine to remove any trace of Jolene from my house, and he’s taken it all back to her place, where he managed to get Ma and take her to the safety of the MC clubhouse.

I sit at my desk to give the illusion I’m busy, burying my head in the laptop. When the knock comes, I look up with an annoyed expression, which I immediately turn to surprise when I see the officer looking through the glass of the door. I indicate for him to come in and two officers enter. “Your manager said we could come straight up,” says one.

“Of course, what can I do for you? Can I get you anything? A drink maybe?”

They shake their heads. “We’d like to speak to you regarding an incident involving Amelia—”

“Is she okay?” I ask, standing. “Is she hurt?”

One of the officers holds out his hands in a placating manner. “She’s fine. Absolutely fine.”

I take a deep breath, nodding and sitting back down. “Okay. Great. Good.”

“What’s your relationship with her?”

“Officer . . .” I wait for him to introduce himself properly.

“Apologies, Officer Patterson and Detective Inspector Stone.”

“Officer Patterson, what exactly do you need to know about our relationship and why?”

“Maybe we could start by asking you about Jolene Hall,” suggests Stone.

I narrow my eyes. “That woman is fast becoming a pain in my backside. I don’t know her too well. I did business with her brothers, but I’m sure you know they’ve been missing in action for a few weeks. Since then, she’s been trying to take over their ventures. And if I’m honest, she’s trying desperately hard to get into my bed.”

“What business?” asks Patterson.

“They asked me to invest in a nightclub they were opening, and also a hotel. We were in talks, but then they disappeared.”

“Did Mrs. Hall mention where she thought they might be?” asks Stone. “Like if they were actually missing, or if they’d gone away on holiday maybe?”

I shake my head. “She said they were missing and she’d contacted the police to report it. She asked me to sit with her when the police took a report.”

“She’s leaned on you since?”

I shake my head. “No. She wants to, but I don’t mix business and pleasure. Well, not always.” I smirk. “I did with Meli, I mean Amelia. She works for me in the office.”

“Are you in a relationship?”
