“That wasn’t a threat. I was just going to do it.”

“Oh my–Kellan, stop playing with her.”

Our Shay growled under his breath. “I don’t know who I need to meet to find out how to seriously hurt you, but I will. Stop fucking with us, and especially my wife.”

Kellan’s nostrils flared. “Wife? You guys seem too young to be married. How old are you?”

I leaned forward. “Uh. We don’t need to go over that, but we’ve been married, been out of college, and have children. That’ll give you an idea.”

“Yeah.” Kennedy shot me a grin.

I laughed and then asked, because when else would I ever have a demon sitting at my table and I’d know about it? “How old are you guys?”

“We’re–” She Shay spoke up, her voice rising and shooting her man look so he knew she’d be handling the questions from now on. “We graduated last year and we’re taking a gap year before I start graduate school.”

“Oh.” Fun! “What are you going for?”

“Shay wants to save the world.”

She shot him another aghast look. “I’m going for social work. I want to work in administration and go as high as I can.”

Gum came over, bringing all of our drinks, setting them on the table. He gave us all a lingering gaze before turning to leave. “This is an interesting bunch considering.”

Kellan said, deadpanning while he reached for his drink, “I’ve already been threatened once and told to be quiet.”

Gum paused, scrutinizing him for a beat. “I’d assumed you’d get threatened a lot more than that.”

“Day’s early. Only been here for a few minutes. Ask again in thirty.”

Gum snorted a laugh, his head shaking, and he slipped back behind the bar.

“What are you?” Caden’s voice drew the attention of everyone at our table. He asked She Shay, but there was no judgment or expression on his face. The question was genuine. “I—just want to know what we’re dealing with here.”

She hesitated, and shared a look with her man, but he was quiet. “My father was an angel. We call them messengers.”

“Oh!” I looked between the two. “An angel and a demon?”

“I’m only half.”

“What’s your other half?” That came from Our Shay.

“Human.” She shared another look with Kellan, this time more lingering.

How did that work? An angel and a demon? But it must’ve because it was obvious he was head over heels for her. I frowned. “How did you meet? Like was it a scene where it was a battle to the death? You’re enemies. Then you meet andbam, the first time your sword slices into her, you’re suddenly wishing a different sword was going–”

“Summer.” Kennedy was laughing. “Oh my God.”

She Shay’s eyes gentled. “It wasn’t like that, but now I’m kinda wishing it were. A more interesting story than what did happen.” They were doing the ‘look’ thing and they were so having their own conversation.

“Enough about us. What are you all doing here? And what are your names?”

We told her, which she got a kick out of the shared Shay name. Kellan just kept giving Our Shay odd looks for a while until we’d ordered our third round, and ate through three pizzas.

Kellan left the table at one point, and it wasn’t soon after when we had another round of drinks and food coming to our table. If he’d ordered them, it would’ve taken longer to get here because Mermaid Bar had filled with more customers since we’d first come in.

I was going with my theory that he used his magic powers for us. When it came to pizza and drinks, I was down for it.
