“How did you know?”

“I have nothing to wear,” I teased.

“I took the liberty of making a purchase. I think you’ll look stunning in the gorgeous attire.”

I pressed my hand against his chest, kneading him through the shirt. “Have you heard anything?”

“If you’re talking about your father, he doesn’t exist on any database.”

“What does that mean?”

He continued rubbing my face, the look in his eyes different than I’d seen before. “It means that our assumptions may be correct.”

“He’s working for the government.”

“Likely. I have something for you.” He pulled out an envelope, the strange look in his eyes haunting.

“What is it?”

“Some information.” He walked away, moving toward the window.

I wasn’t certain I wanted to know what was inside. I’d lived a lie my entire life, pretending to be someone I wasn’t. My name. My father. Nothing seemed real any longer. After rubbing my finger across the flap, I opened it, pulling out several folded pieces of paper. Balance sheets. “I told you I don’t want to know.”

“Learning the amount provides you with some of the information you want. The bank account was set up in your name years ago. Regular deposits are being made, generally on a monthly basis.”

“From where?”

“Your father has been very careful. They are computer transfers with no traceable source. I’ve already tried.”

I held my breath and looked at the amount. “Eleven million dollars?’ My mind was instantly foggy, my heart racing. “That’s not possible. I don’t care what division of law enforcement he’s with, no one makes this kind of money.”

“No, they don’t.”

I glanced in his direction and sighed. “He’s dirty.”

“Or rogue, but you’re right about the heightened amount.”

As the information settled, I couldn’t stand to hold the information in my hand any longer. “I don’t want this.”

“You can start a new life, be anyone you want to be with the money, Jade. As I told you before, your father wanted you to have this. Take it.”

“No. I just…”

“Come here,” he commanded.

“I’m fine. Really. I’m just reeling.”

“I said. Come here.”

I threw him a heated look then moved closer. “What do you want?”

“What do I want? That’s a loaded question. You. Right here. Right now.”

“Anyone could come in,” I told him, glancing over my shoulder toward the foyer even as excitement trickled through me.

“Not if they want to keep their job.”

“Where’s Zane?”
