“Lyubov’ slepa,” Maxim said. At least he didn’t have the usual scowl on his face.

“Love is blind, eh?” I couldn’t help but grin.

“You’ll find out,” he added.

“Spoken like a man who wouldn’t know love if it hit him in the ass,” Diego snarled.

Shaking my head, I scanned the parking lot. “Phoenix is late. Again.”

“As usual,” Brogan said. “Any word from the Emissary?”

“No. I suspect he will go into permanent hiding. There are far too many people looking for him, including the Santiago Cartel, who was responsible for the kidnap attempt on my fiancée’s life.”

Diego huffed. “They’re brutal bastards.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“Thank God the charges against you were dropped,” Diego muttered.

I hadn’t told them Ryan had helped or anything about the conversation we’d had. I’d felt like the man had placed his trust in me to keep his visit a secret. “The Grassos were responsible. Banks was a pushy man.”

“May they rot in hell.” Gabriel shook his head. “There’s Phoenix. Better later than never.”

As the larger-than-life man jogged in our direction, I was reminded how important the Brotherhood had become, not only to keep the peace but also to provide an invisible barrier that only a fool would consider crossing.

I noticed a few additional people were walking toward the church, arriving late.

“It’s almost time,” Phoenix said. “I told you I wouldn’t miss it.”

Cocking my head, I noticed one more guest arriving. He stopped just long enough to look in my direction, his dark shades preventing me from seeing his eyes. But I knew who it was. Whoever had said love could conquer all evils never knew how right they’d been.

Even if the devil was lurking in the background.

“I’ll see you at the reception,” I told them, looking into each one of their eyes for a split second. I’d learned much in the last two months, more so than I had in years, but one thing stood out in my mind.

Friendships and family were priceless.

I headed toward the room Jade had been given to dress, opening the door quietly. While she stood with her back turned, even before I took a single step, I could tell she’d sensed my presence.

Jade turned around slowly, an admonishing look on her face.

At least at first.

As I came closer, her eyes because glassy, her expression now one of lust.

“You’re not supposed to be in here,” she said as I took her into my arms.

“Haven’t you figured out by now I do anything I want to do?”

“Your smile reminds me of a wolf.”

“Better to eat your with. Are you ready for this?”

She pursed her lips, rolling her eyes off to the side. “Let me think about your question. I might have demands.”

I swung her around in a circle. “You aren’t in a position to make any.” As I swatted her on the bottom, she laughed.

“Oh, I will.”
