“Then you’re going to learn what it feels like to have a sore bottom all the time.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Oh, yes, I would.” I brushed the tips of my fingers across her face, drinking in her perfume. “Marry me, Jade.”

“I thought that’s what we were doing.”

“I just wanted to make certain.”

Her features softened, her expression becoming more serious. “For better, for worse.”

“Yes. Come with me. I have a surprise for you.”

“I don’t think I can handle any more.”

I laughed as I backed toward the door, easing her into the corridor. When I found what I was looking for, I nudged her in front of me. “Look at the back of the church on the right.”

“I see people.”

“Really look.”

A few seconds later, I felt her tense, her breath skipping. “How?”

“I might have called that number on my phone and left the information. I wasn’t certain he’d be here, but I thought I’d give it a try.”

“You are amazing.”

As she turned around, throwing her arms around me, I was taken back to the reason she was in my life, the anger I’d felt and the need to make her pay for a reckless move on my part.

And now, as we were about to become man and wife, all I could think about was ensuring I keep her safe and happy.

“I love you,” she murmured. “Do you want your wedding present now?”

“Why, yes, I do,” I said as I tried to drag her back into the room.

“Not that, goofy. This.” As she whispered in my ear, a strange set of feelings shot into every cell and muscle.

My father had been determined that I run the company his way, find a wife, and have an heir. They’d been mandates, all three of which I’d balked against. As she pulled away, a look of mischief on her face, I had to give the man credit. He’d gotten his wish. Well, at least with regard to two of the three.

I would never run the company his way.

“Let’s get married,” I said, smiling at the sound of her laughter.

The End
