“I’m not in the habit of lying.”

Now he was debating me?

He said nothing else as he drove in through a set of gates, doing nothing more than waving to the man inside the guard station. When he stopped the car and got out, he took a few seconds to scan the area. Searching for enemies? I shuddered from the thought.

As he yanked me out of the vehicle, he finally spent a few seconds gazing all the way to my feet. “You’re going to be trouble.”

I was surprised at his admittance. “Maybe that’s exactly what your boss needs.”

His smirk was far too similar to Constantine’s, controlling and possessive. Were all men involved in the mafia this way? He yanked my bag into his hand then led me toward the plane, taking another look before guiding me onboard. “Sit down and remain quiet.”

“Are you terrified some bad guys are going to ruin your day?”

As soon as he shoved me into a seat, he leaned over, giving me a hard look. “Should I remind you of where you are? Do you need a lesson in remaining obedient?”

“Go ahead. Do it. I’m not certain Constantine will approve.”

“Let her alone, Tristen, and for fuck’s sake, unlock the damn cuffs.” Constantine’s voice was filled with aggravation. He barreled past me, but not before I noticed someone had managed to connect their fist to his chiseled face.

“Did you kill him?” I asked, holding out my arms as Tristen unshackled me. He’d made certain the metal was tight around my wrists, but I’d refused to give him any satisfaction of knowing I was in discomfort.

Constantine didn’t answer me at first and as I twisted around, I noticed he was absorbed in making a drink. I was surprised when he brought me one, moving to the seat in front of me. While I accepted the glass, I stared into the liquid, uncertain I wanted to take a sip.

“If I wanted to hurt you, then I would have already done so. I think you know me well enough to realize that.”

“I don’t know you at all, except for what was mentioned in the press and because of what you did to me.” I sniffed the liquor, finally deciding to take a sip. He watched me the entire time, finally leaning back against the seat as the plane door was closed. I’d thought about making a run for it, but at this point I had to start pretending I was cooperating. There was no other way to gain a minimal amount of trust.

Maybe it wouldn’t matter and I’d be locked inside a cage twenty hours a day. I shuddered from the thought.

“To answer your question, Fast Eddie is still alive. I can’t say the same for one of his men.” He rubbed his jaw, opening and closing his mouth several times. “However, your debt has been removed.”

It was impossible to take my eyes off him even as much as I wanted to. He was far too insanely good looking, his gray eyes darker in the light of the plane.

“Do you enjoy killing?” My question amused him and he laughed, almost instantly pressing his palm against his stomach.

“It’s a necessary evil.” His answer seemed trite, practiced, but I didn’t sense he enjoyed it, which was another surprise.

“Why don’t you change the rules?”

He took another gulp, closing his eyes and leaning his head against the headrest. “It’s not that simple, Jade. The profession isn’t one I chose for myself. I was born into it and altering the rules that have been in place for centuries isn’t done without issues.”

“But if you’re in charge, why can’t you? Are you too afraid?”

I wasn’t expecting him to lean forward, grabbing my wrist and yanking me so close our lips were almost touching. I thought about the kiss and tingled all over, only able to concentrate on the two-day stubble that added to his sexiness.

“Because, my beautiful creature, there are rules that cannot be altered.” He took a deep breath, making me self-conscious. When he breathed out, the hot air cascading over me, I trembled in his hold. “Are you wet just thinking about what I’m going to do to you?”

“Are you sick thinking about how I will find a way to slit your throat?”

Tristen coughed from somewhere behind me, drawing his attention briefly. He dragged me even closer, all the way on the edge of my seat. “If you want to continue having privileges like a lady, then you need to keep your caustic mouth in check.”

“Or what will you do, shackle me to the chair, gag me?”

“I assure you that I’ll find a use for your mouth.”

The butterflies returned, a tingling of excitement rearing its ugly head. I was aroused by the thought of being forced to suck his cock? I really was a sick girl, my dark fantasies coming to life because I’d wished them so. For far too many reasons I wanted to curl up into a ball, bawling my eyes out.

Don’t cry, Jade. Never give him the satisfaction of knowing he can get to you.
