The little voice wasn’t helping. There was no doubt he could see just how aroused I’d become by the way my nipples were pushing against the thin material of the blouse I’d selected. I didn’t remember what I’d tossed into the small suitcase, uncaring of how I looked around him. For all I knew, I could have tossed in sweatpants and holey tee shirts. At least I’d thought about grabbing a photograph of my mother and father, which would give me some sense of normalcy.

Unless he destroyed it like he’d already done everything else.

“Yes,sir.”

He issued a low growl, the sound far too sultry, luring me into another wave of desire. I tried to jerk away, but he was having none of it.

He chuckled, slowly easing back, drinking me in as if studying a masterful work of art. “You are going to be a challenge. I do enjoy the banter, but my patience will eventually wane. That’s something for you to keep in mind.”

“Why, certainly, sir. What else do I need to know?” I managed to snag my wrist out of his hand, turning away from him and curling my legs in the massive leather seat. As I stared out the window, I felt the first rumble of the engine, the vibrations adding to the sensations coursing through me. “Where are we going?”

“The Bahamas.”

I snapped my head in his direction. I couldn’t have been more shocked. “Why?”

“Because I wanted to spend some quality time with you alone.”

“I’m not going to give in to you.”

“You will obey my commands, no matter what I ask you.”

All I could do was smile, trying to think about all the nasty things I could do to him. “We shall see.” I turned away again, hating the darkness now even more. My throat was pinched, a feeling of suffocation crowding out the arousal. It was my intention to build on the hate for him. Maybe that would make the circumstances easier to handle.

A full five minutes passed as the plane taxied down the runway, but I knew his eyes never left me. “Do you have a family?” I asked. “I mean brothers and sisters?”

“Now we’re engaging in polite conversation. That’s an improvement. Yes, I have a younger brother and a sister.”

“A dog?”

He laughed. “I doubt I’d be good with animals.”

“I love them. They create a home.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” He swirled his drink, polishing off the rest. He’d given me bourbon, which I hated admitting tasted excellent.

When I threw back the rest of the glass, he grinned. “Do you do everything so dramatically?”

“Maybe I like drama.”

“Hmmm… Then you’ll love being a part of the family.” His words seemed to surprise him as much as they did to me.

“Family isn’t forced together.”

“I beg to differ. Within every marriage there are secrets and dislikes. Wouldn’t you agree?” He lifted a single eyebrow as he studied me.

“Maybe. I guess.”

“Tell me about your family.”

“Why do you want to know?”

He got up from his seat, taking the glass from my hand. Then he leaned over, close enough the same scintillating shivers coursed through me. “It’s called polite conversation and getting to know each other. I would think you’d prefer that to silence and anger.”

His dark chuckle as he moved to the back of the plane sent a different kind of chill down my spine. I glanced out the window into the darkness, curious what the hell he would do to me in the Bahamas. Everything about him was unexpected, but if I had to guess, I’d say he was trying to keep me off guard. Why? So I wouldn’t see his blade coming until seconds before he sliced through my jugular?

As he returned, both drinks refilled, I did what I could to try to relax. Everything remained inside a huge vortex, a horrifying nightmare that I prayed I’d wake up from. He rubbed one of the glasses against my cheek, guttural sounds floating around us. He found our banter arousing? When he slid the crystal between my breasts, I lifted my gaze, making certain there was as much hatred in my eyes as possible.

“You look lovely,” he said then moved the drink closer to my hand.
