“Why, yes,jefe.”

He ended the call. I tossed the phone onto the coffee table, glaring down at the wine pooling across the tile floor. It reminded me of the color of blood. I’d spilled enough in my life, but then again, not as much as my father. All while my mother had looked the other way, choosing to see the good in the man she adored. I’d been taught that love could conquer all by the sweet, caring woman while my father had reminded all his children that love was a tool, often necessary in wars.

I’d never really known what he meant until today. Jade could be used against me in an invisible war now fought over computers and through lines of credit. Why did I have a bad feeling it would be necessary to use my father’s ancient methods to keep her safe?

My family.

The thought drilled into my mind. I grabbed my phone again, dialing Brogan. He’d told me little other than she’d been found and the circumstances how. I was curious if he knew anything else.

I’d awakened him, his raw grumble giving me a smile. “What?”

“Wake up, sleeping beauty.”

“Very funny. It’s three-thirty in the morning, for fuck’s sake.”

“Four-thirty where I am.”

“Did you find her?” he grunted and I heard the rustle of sheets.

“I found her exactly where you said she was. She even played right into my hands.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

The Brotherhood had provided a line of communications through our different channels that we rarely used. It was Brogan’s access to the dark web that had interested me the most. He had a side to him he covered up with his boyish grin and soulful eyes, but inside he was as demented as the rest of us. “What else did you find about her?”

“What are you looking for specifically?”

“The identity of her father.”

“Hmm… I didn’t go down that path. I could if you wanted me to.”

Even though I trusted every member of the Brotherhood, it wasn’t good to air dirty laundry no matter our relationship. “Why did she end up working at Maxim’s place?”

“You’ll have to ask him that. You know we’re not the best of buddies.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Look, one thing I did find out. She had money in a trust fund.”

The news caught me off guard. “A trust fund?”

“Yeah, I don’t know the amount or the details, but it came up in a search.” I twisted around, staring toward the door leading to the hallway.

“That’s very interesting.”

“Offshore, which did raise a red flag. I thought you knew about it.”

“Nope. But I’ll find out.” I wondered if she knew about it. No, she would have used the money if she’d had access to pay off Fast Eddie. Unless there was a clause that she had to be a certain age.

“Maybe Daddy was some rich dude from a Fortune 100 company,” he said, half laughing. He knew the score as well as I did.

“Or maybe she’s the daughter of a very important man.”

“Yeah, there’s that. Let me know if you want me to travel that path anymore.”

“I will,” I told him.

“Will you be attending the meeting?”
