Shit. I’d forgotten our quarterly meeting was in a few days. “Since I’m hosting the damn thing, I guess so.”

“I thought you might be hiding under the covers.”

“That’s a bad choice of words, my friend.”

He laughed as he ended the call.

I shoved the phone into my pocket then headed for the bedroom, pushing open the door with a single finger. Then I leaned against the doorframe, watching as her chest rose and fell naturally. She was so damn beautiful, fraught with myriad emotions she couldn’t handle.

Maybe she was masterful at handling me. Or so she thought.

Who are you, Jade Rollins?

Very few people had dared try to take advantage of me. If she believed she was strong enough to do so, our relationship would become interesting.

The thought shifted through my mind several times. The question would need to be answered and soon.

No matter how I acquired the information.

While I was riled, my desire took precedence over the anger that threatened to turn me into the hard, cold bastard I’d enjoyed portraying the majority of my life. The fact she’d managed to get under my skin was something that I found difficult to deny.

Or to refuse continue enjoying.

If sweet Jade thought she could fuck with me, she’d soon learn what crossing me would do.

Cause and effect.

Actions and consequences.

My fingers ached to punish her all over again.

Yes, I was a brutal man.

CHAPTER7

Jade

Rolling waves.

Exotic scents.

Warm sunshine.

I opened my eyes, blinking several times as I tried to fully awaken. I could swear I was in paradise.

“You are mine. Mine to take. Mine to punish. Mine to fuck.”

I remembered where I was and cringed.

I could almost feel his hot breath skipping across my ear as he whispered the words, his tone full of domination.

After taking several deep breaths, I found the courage to slide my hand under the covers. He hadn’t ripped off my clothes. Exhaling, I wasn’t certain whether I was disappointed or shocked. As I eased to a sitting position, I realized I must have fallen asleep after sitting down on the couch. How had I gotten here?

I closed my eyes, a brief image floating in my mind. He’d carried me to bed, tucking me under the covers. “Wow,” I said out loud, immediately pressing my hand across my lips. As a tingle drifted through me, I realized it was from the memory of being in his arms. He’d carried me as if I weighed nothing, the gruff man gentler than I’d believed he was capable of.

As I lowered my feet to the floor, I was able to laugh for the first time since the nightmare had begun. He’d removed my shoes. Why? Why act as if he was concerned about a single comfort or my protection? The man had such a diverse personality that it had already driven me crazy. I heard the waves crashing against the shore and sighed as I turned my head. Nothing would make what had happened okay but waking up in what some would consider paradise certainly wasn’t what I’d expected.

And he’d left the sliding door open, only a thin screen away from running down to the beach. If I could find anyone, maybe I could get to safety.
