He was just as relentless in his actions, driving into me with enough force I was surprised we both didn’t collapse. I could sense he was struggling with maintaining control, which only made me want to tease him again, squeezing until he roared like the predator he was.

“Bad… girl,” he breathed and I clenched my muscles again, his entire body started to shake.

I closed my eyes, pretending as I’d done before that we were in a beautiful fairytale. As he erupted deep inside, filling me with his seed, I was struck by just how calm I felt.

But I knew it was the calm before the storm.

As if evil was lurking just beyond the bank of green grass.

Suddenly, a cold shiver drifted down my spine.

* * *

Warmth.

The tingling sense of being safe and warm was exactly what I needed, even if being in his arms for longer than acting on our insatiable desires seemed out of place. There was no real reason for the swarm of butterflies to continue dancing in my stomach, but they’d been relentless since returning to the house.

Constantine had remained different, becoming more reflective as he’d shown me through the house. Now we remained outside in the crisp air by the pool. As I curled my feet under me in the Adirondack chair, holding my arms, the chill coursing through me was not only because the temperature had dropped significantly since returning.

He was remaining so still and quiet that I’d been forced to look twice to see if he was still behind me. I heard rustling and sighed, rolling the wine in the glass as I stared at the shimmering lights of the pool.

When he slipped his jacket around my shoulders, I lifted my head. “You’re quiet. What’s wrong?”

“And you ask too many questions,” he said as he squeezed my shoulders.

“You’re never going to tell me anything about your business, are you?”

He walked around me, easing into another chair, sitting on the edge and hunkering over. “What do you want to know?”

“What does your family do?”

“You’re already heard, Jade. If you’re looking for details about the various criminal activities, I will not supply you with that.” He took a gulp of his drink, still deep in thought.

“That’s not what I’m looking for.”

“Then what?” he challenged.

Why had he suddenly closed himself off? Was acting as if he enjoyed spending time with me too much for him to take? Or was it so foreign that he didn’t know how to handle the aftermath? “I just wanted to learn more. That’s it, Constantine. I’m not trying to get you to break a confidence or tell me trade secrets. I don’t care about those anyway.”

As he threw me a look, his upper lip curled. “I’ll keep that in mind. We own several resorts and casinos, a few other real estate holdings as well.”

“And the horses? I noticed a picture of you with a derby winner.”

“Were you snooping?”

“Just looking.”

Shaking his head, he laughed. “I also own a champion thoroughbred. He’s won several small races over the last year, getting him warmed up. He was accepted as a contender in the Kentucky Derby in May.”

“Isn’t the prize significant?”

“It’s not about the money.”

“Ah, I see.”

He hung his head low as he looked at me, the lighting off the pool creating a sizzling glow in his irises. “What do you think you see?”

“You wanted to be a jockey.”
