“Mmm… You will keep prodding until you learn all my dark, demonic secrets.”

“Yes, I will.”

Before he had a chance to answer, his phone rang. He took a deep breath as he leaned over, reaching into the pocket of his jacket, brushing his fingers across my arm when he did so. “I need to take this.”

“I know the drill. Should I leave?”

“No, stay here. I’ll be right back.”

As he walked away, I pulled his jacket around me, still shivering. He walked around the pool and out of earshot before answering. Within two seconds, it was easy to tell he was angry, his body stiffening. He even threw me another look and the darkness couldn’t hide the concern on his face. Then he raised his voice, his hand motion indicating fury.

I huddled in the jacket, unable to take my eyes off him.

When he was finished, I thought for certain he was going to toss the phone into the water. He held up his hand, shaking his head several times. The moment he turned toward me, everything about him seemed different, a light switch going off. He took long strides in my direction, taking the glass from my hand.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, gasping as he yanked me onto my feet.

“We need to get back to the house.”

“Why?” I yanked his jacket around me, refusing to let go of it.

“Because it’s required.” He dialed another number, unblinking as he stared at me. Then he swept his eyes from right to left, moving around me as if worried a sharpshooter was in the trees surrounding the pool. “Drago. I need two men at the house. Now.” He turned around to face me. “Yeah, we have an issue. Good enough.” He ended the call, his jaw clenching.

“Tell me what’s going on.” The demand in my tone was met by him narrowing his eyes.

“You need to just do what I say.”

“Not unless you tell me what’s going on.”

He yanked my arm and I jerked away. “How quickly you forget who’s in charge here.”

“Don’t do that. We just shared a lovely evening. For once I almost liked you. Now, you pull this?”

“This?” he said as he got in my face, fisting his hand.

I thought for certain he was going to hit me and flinched. When he read my mind, he recoiled, immediately lowering his hand and turning away from me slightly, his breathing irregular.

“I would… never hit you, Jade. Never. I’m not that kind of man.”

He was more distraught than I’d seen him, his chest heaving. When I touched his arm, he flinched just enough I witnessed it. “What’s happening?”

“It’s Daniel.”

“Your brother.”

Nodding, he pressed his hand against the small of my back, forcing me to walk out of the area. “He was attacked.”

“Oh, my God.”

“He’s fine, but they broke his arm and he’s beaten pretty badly.”

“They?” I asked. “Are these the same people that attacked us before?”

“No, I think it’s a family enemy.”

“Are you certain?”

He said nothing for a few seconds. “I’m not of certain of anything at this point. I’m going to the hospital to check on him.”
