“Fine. Whatever. Just get me out of here.”

“What do you remember about the assholes who did this?”

He gave me a sheepish look. “Nothing of value, just like I told the damn police. Their vehicle came out of nowhere, jerking to a stop and two guys jumped out. Real old school crap Pops used to tell us about.”

“That’s the Grassos’ style.”

“Try not to kill them,” he huffed. “We have too much to lose.”

What I wanted to do was tear the men apart limb from limb.

“Yeah, I know.”

“What about the special meeting?” he asked, keeping his voice down.

Meeting. We were careful with what we said in public. I wasn’t interested in an arms deal. The nagging remained furrowing inside, the stench of it repulsive. I’d bet everything I owned it was a setup.

“I may push it off.”

He seemed shocked. “Why?” When I didn’t say anything, he grinned. “You really do think the Feds are onto it.”

“I do.”

“A lot of money is on the table.”

“We have plenty of money.”

His look of amusement remained. “Not according to Pops.”

“And you know how I feel about that. I took the liberty of summoning your lieutenant. He’s taking you to your place and staying there. And I do not want you without a soldier by your side.”

“God,” he hissed. “I hate it when you call him that. Jet already has an ego the size of a skyscraper. And you summoned him? When you use words like that it makes me think of our father.”

“Well, Pops had a way of doing things that prevented shit like this from happening.” As a nurse entered the room, I gave her a hateful glare. I’d run out of patience at this point. She gave us both a harsh look then backed away.

He sighed and lifted his head. “I’m sorry. Okay? I was meeting someone.”

“Someone.”

“Yeah, someone. A girl. Okay? I deserve a life, you know.”

“Not if it means sneaking around doing it.”

Laughing, he folded the jacket over his arm. “I’m not seventeen, Con,” he said. He’d used the shortened name since he was a kid, unable to pronounce the longer one. It was hard to believe how much younger he was, but also how much he’d accomplished in his life.

“Then don’t act like it. You know what we’re facing. I’m not going to lose you.”

“Wow. You haven’t said that to me in years. You’re really bothered by what’s going on.”

“I don’t like being played.”

“Don’t worry. You’re not going to lose anyone, bro. The Grassos we can handle. Any news on the girl’s father?”

“Not yet.”

He glanced over his shoulder then walked closer. “The shipment is coming in tomorrow. We need to be on our game. You need to call me if you want the specialty items stored or moved.”

I loathed still being in the business of selling arms. That had started the entire mess I’d been involved in nine years before. If I hadn’t allowed the deal to get personal, none of this shit would be happening. The Grassos had smelled blood in the water. They knew our organization could be at its weakest.
