“I’ll handle it, Daniel. You just take care of yourself.”

“I’m fine. You know it needs to stay business as usual. Don’t argue with me.”

He was right. The man was turning out to be a formidable prince of the empire, which my mother loved to remind him of.

As Jet forced himself into the room, the same nurse followed, trying to tell him that he wasn’t allowed. As usual, Jet didn’t listen.

“Stay with him,” I told the man.

“You got it.” At least Jet could easily break a man’s neck with one hand.

“You’re not telling Pops about this, are you?” Daniel asked, as if he was underage and I’d provided bail money, which had happened on two occasions.

“He’s going to find out. So is your sister. You know how she is.”

“Yeah. She has that sixth sense about her. I’m surprised my phone hasn’t rung already. I’m going to give you a piece of advice, which is rare. You need to put an end to this war before we lose more men and more of our livelihood.”

I thought about what he was saying and nodded. “I know. I still think you should take the day off.”

“And miss out on all the fun? Not a chance. You should remember that we have the huge charity casino event at the end of the week in addition to everything else.”

I’d forgotten all about it. The event had been planned for over six months, brainchild of my sister who believed we needed to boost our reputation in an entirely different way. In addition to the party of the year, a high stakes poker game would occur at the same time, the twenty-thousand-dollar entrance fee going to a children’s charity. Everyone who was anyone in several states was set to attend. There was no way to postpone it.

“I have a bad feeling the event will be used.” Hell, the mayor and the chief of police had accepted invitations, several celebrities as well.

Daniel eyed me carefully. “I know this shit with Jade Rollins is weighing heavily on your mind, but we can’t lose business because of this. You are coming. Yes?”

“I’ll be there.” It was the perfect night for the prosecutor to take me into custody, and I had no doubt that’s what Martin Banks had planned.

“Why don’t you bring Jade?”

“Maybe I will,” I said, grinning as I headed to the door. Daniel was no longer a kid by any means. He was tough, perhaps more so than I’d realized.

However, as I walked out, my fury continued to increase. The darkness was comforting, although the shadows reminded me that evil lurked just under the surface. Maybe this was a game changer, an opportunity to make the final changes in the Thorn Corporation I’d considered.

The drive to the house was luckily without incident. The Grassos would wait to do anything else until my next move. Whatever I did had to be unexpected.

I walked into the house, Drago immediately at attention. “Any issues?” I asked as I tossed my keys onto the small table.

“Nothing except an informant let me know the chatter on the street is getting worse,” he answered.

“Anything in particular?”

“People know you’re keeping the woman.”

That’s exactly what I hoped would happen, but not for fodder from what I called streetsweepers. I wanted to know what the prosecutor had in mind. The man was undoubtedly gloating, which could lead to him tipping his hand. That could sway my decision about the arms deal.

“Let me know if anything else goes on, no matter how inconsequential. Where is Nick?”

He grinned. “I sent him to work the streets. The one thing he’s good at is getting people to talk.”

“Put another detail on my brother’s house, my sister’s as well.”

“They won’t like it,” he cautioned.

“Yeah, well, they can get over it.”

“You’re worried about another hit?”
