Slowly he rolled down the window and looked up at me.

“I ought to arrest your sorry ass for DUI.”

“I wasn’t even moving.”

“Yeah, but you were about to drive.”

“You can’t arrest someone for they werethinkingof doing!”

“You were behind the wheel, with the motor running, after telling me you were going home. You’re obviously still drunk. Damn right I can. Open this fucking door.” He hesitated until I growled at him and then he pulled frantically at the lock. I yanked open the door, and he started to get out, but I shoved him over and pushed myself inside. “Get over. What are you waiting for? Move your ass.”

He goggled at me. “Does this mean you’re going to drive me home?”

“Looks that way,” I said, not really able to believe it myself. Even I wasn’t sure what was happening.

“Put on your seat belt.”

He scrambled to do as I said, but he couldn’t seem to get the slot in the hole. He fumbled around with it for way too long. I jerked the strap from his hand and buckled him in. He leaned in close to me and made an inhaling sound next to my hair. I looked over at him, startled. “What the hell are you doing? Were you sniffing me?”

“Who, me? No.”

“Uh huh.” I glared at him and straightened up, giving him a dirty look before I put the big tank of a car in gear and pulled out of the lot.

One look at my face as the streetlights played over it must have shown him that I was in no mood to talk, because he was pretty quiet as we navigated the wet streets, and the traffic was still bad. We hadn’t gone too far, when I heard him make a gagging sound. I knew what was coming next. He moaned aloud and clapped his hand over his mouth, and I sent up a prayer that he could keep it together until I could find a place to pull over, but God wasn’t particularly inclined to do me any favors that evening, it seemed. It was ready to spill out of him as he gave me a frantic look and began rolling down his window to stick his head out. I crossed two lanes and pissed off a few drivers to careen over to the curb.

Like I said, it wasn’t a moment too soon. He threw open his door, bent over the gutter and was sick until it seemed like there couldn’t be anything left in his stomach, but the moment he tried to raise his head, it came on him again.

Through the whole dismal ordeal, I sat patiently, holding onto the back of his belt so he didn’t fall out of the car onto his head and even handing him my clean white handkerchief when he finally purged himself enough to collapse back against the seat.

I handed him the mostly full bottle of water I found in the console, and he grabbed it gratefully and swished it around in his mouth, spitting it out in the gutter again and then doing it all over again twice more until there couldn’t be much of anything left.

“Better?” I asked him after a moment, smirking at him. He gave me a look that said he was wishing fervently he was dead.

“Do I look like I’m better?” He covered his face with his arm and moaned. “Oh, God, I think I’m dying. Take me to a hospital.”

“You’re not dying, and you don’t need a hospital. Though you’ll probably wish you were dead in the morning.”

I fished out a couple of sticks of gum from my pocket and handed it to him.

“Here, chew these. We’re not too far from your place.”

He took them and closed his eyes, chewing frantically. That must have only helped him a little, because he groaned again. “Is the car spinning around and around or does it just feel like it?”

“We’re fine. Try to relax.” I glanced over at him. He was pale and sweaty, his hair plastered to the side of his face. He smelled like tequila, and he looked like shit. So why did I get hard just looking at him?

I pulled up in his driveway, and we just sat there for a minute. Him, because he was too sick and miserable to get out. I didn’t know what my problem was. Finally, he roused himself enough to speak to me. “How are you getting back to your friends?”

“You’re not the only one with an Uber app. The difference is I actually know how to use mine.”

“Oh.”

“Or I’ll call a friend.”

“The red headed girl you were with?”

I shrugged.

“She’s pretty.”
