“I ought to have my goddamn head examined.” I hit the steering wheel and swore some more. “I really don’t know what thefuckI was thinking following you out of that bar like that, just because you’re such a goddamn fuckup. I really don’t even like you.” I glared at him, and he must have felt compelled to agree. He nodded again, like what I was saying made perfect sense to him.

“One of those guys could have followed you out of the bar, you know, and then where would you be? You’re a born victim, goddammit, because you keep doing stupid things, and you need a fucking keeper! If you had done what I told you and called for a ride, none of this would be happening.”

He looked around, like he was wondering what exactly I thought was happening. He looked back up at me like a kid looking at a mean teacher who was demanding some kind of answer. He nodded solemnly and tried to supply it. “Yes?”

“Is that all you can fucking say?”

“No?”

I cursed then. Low and deep and using every filthy word I knew, after just admonishing him about the way he talked. I grabbed him and hauled him over on top of me in that big leather seat and pressed my mouth hard against his. Now in the history of the world, there have been remarkable kisses. The old-school V-J Day kiss in Times Square, when the sailor kissed the pretty nurse; the kiss between Brittany Spears and Madonna on the MTV music awards; the first gaycouple sharing a kiss on their wedding day after gay marriage was legalized;and then there was the time Usain Bolt got down on his knees to kiss the track after winning his Olympic race. All memorable kisses that have deservedly gone down in history.

And none of them, not a single damn one, could hold a candle to that kiss Jace O’Neal gave me in the front seat of his mama’s Buick.

A jolt of electricity shot down my spine along with something else—clarity, maybe or a realization that he was the one. Jason O’Neal was it for me, and I had fallen in love with him lock, stock and barrel without even realizing it.

When I had seen how kind and tender he was with his brother. When he faced up to me so defiantly and dared me not to love him. When he told me how he’d been hurt by Tyler over and over again but just kept coming back for more, because he was his little brother and what else could he do? When he told me how he’d reacted that night when a fucking vampire and his thrall had tried their best to kill him—just him and his little old lady neighbor facing a fucking vampire with a baseball bat and some furniture stacked up against a door. He was brave all the way to his bones and the goodness and beauty that was inside him shone through all the little cracks in his character like the sunlight shining through holes in an old shade.

His sweet body relaxed under me, and the kiss went to a whole other level of heat. I slipped my tongue into his mouth and a lot of thoughts went swirling through my head, not the least of which was,I am so fucked. He was on my lap, twisted around to face me, his ass on my thighs and my hard cock rubbing against his ass. I finished with his lips and started kissing his cheeks and his nose and even his eyelids and then my mouth traveled over his throat. I licked again and again over the healing wound on his neck, like I could erase Dylan Malone from his body and his mind. I could stake my own claim on Jace and make sure whoever came at him again knew that he was mine.

He responded with sweet little whimpers that made me gasp and strain and push my rigid cock against him even harder. All the time his hands were all over me, touching me wherever he could reach. I fastened my hands on his ass like it was a life preserver, and we had just gone overboard. I felt a little like I had, because I was drowning in this kiss. I was getting lightheaded from lack of breath, but I couldn’t seem to let him go. His arms had wrapped themselves around my neck and he groaned against my ear as I settled him more firmly against my cock.

I went back to kissing him again, even though his breath smelled like spearmint gum and alcohol, biting his lips and rubbing my jaw against his, while I ground against his abs. The next thing I knew he was zipping down my jeans and slipping his hand into the waistband of my briefs. My cock strained forward eagerly when he pulled me out, and my eyes rolled back in my head when he touched me. I almost came in his hand. He started to stroke me while I pushed up his shirt and fastened my mouth on one round, pebbly nipple.

I should have stopped him, but I defy any red-blooded male to think logically when someone is jacking his dick. I cupped the back of his head with my hand and pulled him closer and he moaned with pleasure. He was rubbing his other hand over my chest and murmuring appreciatively.I bit down on his nipple, and he groaned as I felt a little shiver go through him.

“I knew you’d feel like this, all hard muscle,” he said, panting, as I took his mouth again and there wasn’t enough time to breathe between kisses. I pushed up desperately into his hand and then I was coming embarrassingly soon. He stroked me through it and murmured in my ear some more. Something soft and so fucking sweet.I was ready to go again, and I wanted to lay him down in that big front seat and pull down his pants.

Then my brain came back online, and I swore softly and pushed him off me—not in a rough way. I handled him like he was made of glass, because he was precious to me. But I couldnotdo this. I knew better, and it was unconscionable to compromise the case like this. Damn it, he was a thrall. Malone’s blood and sex thrall and it was only a matter of time before Malone showed up to either claim him for good or finish what he’d started.

I carefully deposited him back on his side of the car and then jumped out of the Buick like it was on fire. I heard him stumbling out after me, but I was already standing at the end of the car, straightening my clothes. I warned him away.

“No!” I said, pointing my finger sternly at him. “You go on inside the house. Get out of here.”

“But I…”

“Jace, go in the house, I said.”

“No, please, I just want to…” I shot him a glare, and he took a step back.

“Okay. Okay, I’m going. Take it easy.”

He shoved his hands in his pockets and stared at me. “Can I just ask you who you are? I don’t even know your real name.”

“You know my real name.”

“Oh. Then are you with some other agency? The police said they’d never heard of you, or your partner and they said they’d look into it.”

“I’m not at liberty to say who I am. That’s on a need-to-know basis.”

He laughed. “That sounds like you’re some kind of spy.” His eyes got big. “Wait…areyou? Was Dylan mixed up in some kind of spy stuff?”

“No. Don’t be stupid.”

“Oh.” He looked hurt, and I regretted calling him stupid.

Though he was.

“Look, I can’t say who I work for. But we mean you and your family no harm. Not if you had nothing to do with Dylan Malone’s disappearance.”
