“What’s the plan here, Anson? What do you want from me?”

He opens his mouth, but I steamroll over him.

“You didn’t want to have anything to do with me these last few weeks, but now you’re all over me because I’m pregnant? If you didn’t want me before, then I don’t want you now,” I snap.

With that, I grab my purse, slide out of the booth and stomp toward the exit.

Anson

I can’t keep doingthis. I need to tell her that I’m so sorry and would do anything to fix all of this.

I toss a twenty on the table and rush after my girl. She’s about halfway across the parking lot when I catch up with her.

“No, stop,” I say as I wrap my hand around her wrist and tug her to stop and turn to face me. “I love you, Lottie.”

She freezes, her body tensing as she stares at me with those big pale blue eyes of hers.

“I’m an idiot, Lottie. I’ve been in love with you for years and trying to balance my friendship with you and Rhett with my feelings for you, and I blew it all up in one night. I should have chosen you.”

She blinks, her wrist hanging limply in my grasp.

“I should have chosen you that night. I should have chosen you ten years ago. You mean more to me than my friendship with Rhett, and I can’t live without you. I’ve tried to the last few weeks, and it fucking sucked.”

She looks away from me, staring at the cracked sidewalk beneath our feet.

“I was just scared that I was going to lose the only family I’ve ever known. I shouldn’t have pushed you away, and I’ll hate myself every day for not waking up next to you the next morning. I’ve messed all of this up between us, but I swear that if you give me a second chance, I’ll make up for all of this. I’ll do anything you ask to make this right, baby.”

“Are you just saying that because I’m pregnant?” She asks, her eyes watery with unshed tears.

“Fuck no! I promise I’ll stop swearing so much before the baby is here,” I rush to add, and she laughs.

A car honks, and I realize that we’re blocking the parking lot's exit so I drag her over to the sidewalk.

“I love you, Lottie. I’ve wanted you from the second that I saw you. I loved you when I didn’t even know what love was. I would want you and love you even if you weren’t pregnant with our kid. Please, baby. Please give me a second chance to make this right for you.”

She chews on her plump bottom lip, and I hold my breath. She has my heart resting in her hands, and if she broke it right now, I would deserve that. It doesn’t stop me from hoping that she doesn’t.

“Okay,” she finally whispers, and my knees almost buckle with relief.

“Really?” I can’t help but ask, and she laughs.

“Should I say no?”

“No! I love you,” I say, gathering her up in my arms before she can change her mind.

“I love you too,” she whispers in my ear, and I tighten my grip on her, nearly crushing her against me.

“The baby,” she wheezes, and I release her.

“Oh my god! I’m going to get better at this. I’ll read all the books,” I promise her as my hands go to her stomach.

“We’re okay,” she assures me, and I relax slightly. “What happens now?”

“Well, we need to tell Rhett, and I’d like to take you out on a proper date. When you’re up for it,” I add, remembering that she said her morning sickness was rough.

“I have a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. Do you want to come with—”
