Kassian held the throne, and I was hisaima. The magic flowed to my people effortlessly and without ceremony. It was part of our vampire nature again, like it always should have been.

Ice wolves and gobbelins clashed in the streets. Vampires snarled and ripped each other apart as commoner fought noble, traitors following Merden fought citizens following Kassian.

I saw Kas first, his sword flashing as he cut down a gobbelin, leaping eagerly into the fray.

Hello, aima. I pushed the words into his mind, radiating power at him. His black eyes met mine, and he swelled with magic, freezing the gobbelins before him like blocks of ice as he soaked in the power I’d brought with me.

I knew you’d come back, he answered me, the words joyous in my mind.

Cade wasn’t far from him, blond hair flashing in the sunlight as he reveled in his returned strength.Hey, candy girl. You’re a little late, but I’ll take it out on that ass later, he said in my mind, easily running his sword through a traitor vampire, cutting out their heart with a vicious grin.

His motions locked up as he spotted Nicolas with me, and my handsome professor was by his side in an instant. They embraced like brothers, and my heart filled nearly to bursting as I watched them jump back into the fight. Cade covered Nicolas with steel, and Nic bolstered Acadian with magic as they worked like two halves of the same fierce fury.

I scanned the palace grounds, seeing Blaise and Valentina, then Vento and Valanga, all directing soldiers and wolves while they fought viciously. Only their small numbers made it obvious how much they’d needed my help - the future of this city was strong in their hands.

But where was Rush?

Where was Luca?

A great thunderclap of a roar sounded from the side, as an enormous white wolf tore a gobbelin in half, crushing easily through its bones with huge teeth. The wolf clawed clean through another, leaping into the air and crushing two more under its weight.

My eyes widened in wonder as I scented him on the cold air.

“Luca?” I whispered, and the beast somehow heard me over the din of battle.

“He’s a werewolf now, love. Go to him.”

I whirled, running straight into Rush’s outstretched arms. “Fuck, I missed you all so much,” I murmured against his dark green skin. He was proudly wearing his fae form, this time protected by swirls of golden magic this time that nobody would ever mistake as gobbelin power.

“Let the destruction unfold, my Queen. Saori Sang is nearly ready for you.”

He pressed me away, fierce love shining in his eyes as he nodded toward Luca. My wolf was holding back, and I knewwhy. I was beside him in a flash, my new ice magic freezing the gobbelins around us to death with a thought.

“Thank you,” I said simply, reaching up to run my hands through the wolf’s silky, snow-white fur. “You made all of this possible.”

Guilt flashed in his golden eyes, but he bent to nuzzle against my neck. I threw my arms around him, drinking in the solid warmth that somehow radiated through all of his icy magic.

Thank you for gifting me your trust, kitten. I’ll spend a lifetime giving it back to you. But... just so you know. There’s a piss-ant cunt who thinks she’s still Queen heading this way.

I laughed into his fur, flexing my muscles as I turned away. I was so fucking ready for this moment.

Before she could reach me, though, Girard rushed out from behind her. Holding his hands up to me and cowering before the werewolf at my back, he begged, “Please, Kana. Don’t do this.”

I felt my eyebrows raise. “Are you fucking kidding me right now, Girard?”

He trembled, but he held steady. Merden had paused too, a tiny smirk on her lips as she took in the display of loyalty. She’d hurt him so many times, so many ways, and he still chose her. Unfortunately for him, it had stopped hurting a long time ago. I felt the grim approval and satisfaction of Grand-mère in my chest when I shook my head at my father, knowing the right choice to make.

“You had your chance - so many times - to be my father. You chose her. You chose death,” I said, my voice calm and cold as I flicked my wrist at him.

Ice magic pulled together in my fingertips like a spear, and I hurled it straight into my father’s heart. He may have been the vessel to give me Grand-mère’s blood, but that was the only thing he’d ever been good for.

Merden screamed with rage, but I knew it wasn’t from love for him.

She loved nobody except herself, and it was time for her to get what she deserved.

Raising her arms, she snarled some sort of spell. Ropes of deep red blood magic coiled toward me menacingly, and I felt Luca tense for action.

I smiled. I didn’t need his help with this one.
