The power of Khione and the Ancient Magic of the ancestors collected in my body, electrifying me like a bolt of lightning. When I raised my own arms to mimic her, the curling blood froze in place, hovering before it fell to the ground and shattered.

Calling out my intent to all of myaimaand anyone else watching, I doubled down on the force of my new magic, slowing Merden’s blood in her veins until it stopped flowing completely. The cold around me deepened so harshly that Luca was forced to back away, his fur tinkling with ice crystals.

I froze that bitch solid, raising her several feet into the air with the panic of impending death locked forever in her ice-covered eyes. Then I reached for the sword at my back, a huge, heavy impossible grunt of a weapon I would never have managed to carry before.

And I drove the steel straight through Merden’s heart, shattering her like an ice sculpture.

A light, playful wind that sounded a lot like Khione’s laughter whipped around me, scattering the flakes of ice and snow to the far corners of the city as the mist jumped and twisted, joyfully racing the wind to dissolve the sparkling fragments.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

KASSIAN

The world wasn’t big enough for the happiness I felt the moment I saw Kana.

And as she froze and shattered Merden to nothing bigger than snowflakes on the wind, that happiness was only surpassed by pride.

I had one badass fuckingaima.

“Go to your damn Queen,” Cade said, striding up to me with a wicked grin on his face. His shirt was splashed with gobbelin blood, and he looked more alive than I’d ever seen him.

I took his advice and sprinted toward Kana. She’d been taking in Luca’s new werewolf form, but she turned to look straight at me, her dazzling smile nearly knocking me off my feet.

“Hello, thief,” she said, stepping into my arms.

“That’s King to you,” I teased, but my voice was hoarse with relief. She was whole and smiling, her eyes returned to their original black and her braid whipping in the breeze. She’d truly returned from the mist.

“I’d say something corny about you stealing my Queendom and my heart, but I’d really rather just finish this fucking battle,” she said, smirking up at me.

“Bet I can kill more gobbelins than you,” I offered, and she grinned.

“Doubtful, thief. Highly doubtful.”

We whipped into action, and between the new magic spreading through the vampires and the ferocity of our new ice wolf allies, it wasn’t long at all before the gobbelins began toretreat. We’d decimated their numbers, and although part of me wanted to track down every last filthy one of them, I also kind of had a Queen to crown.

And by crown, I meant make her scream my name over and over and over again.

Vento was approaching us, a new sort of life in his face, too. “The ice wolves will follow the gobbelins. We’ll track them as far as they go - you have what you need to protect the city now.”

“We definitely do,” I said, smiling at Kana as the wolves began to circle up behind Vento. Valanga was there, already organizing search parties to hunt down the fleeing gobbelins.

“Thank you for everything,” Kana said, reaching to embrace Vento. Luca swallowed down a growl behind us, and I snickered up at him.

“She’s all ours, wolf.”

“You know it,” Kana said as Vento headed away and Luca shifted back down to his naked two-legged form. Kana sighed and wrapped her arms around him, rubbing against him in a very un-Queenly way. “Let’s wrap this shit up. I’m in the mood to celebrate.”

She waved to Blaise across the garden, where she and Valentina were already directing guards on where to haul the dead gobbelin bodies for burning. Blaise gave her a thumbs-up, and I chuckled.

“She’ll make an excellent Head of Guards,” Kana said, eying me over Luca’s shoulder as though she thought I might object.

“Like I would argue with you,” I said, laughing. “This whole city knows that no matter how I got to be King, you’re always going to be the woman in charge.”

Cade and Nicolas were ambling over to us, and the whole scene was starting to feel pretty relaxed. “Brought you some pants, you filthy fucker,” Cade called to Luca, and I was relieved to not have to see the man’s giant cock swinging around. Notthat I was feeling inadequate, but still. Battlefield nakedness was completely unnecessary.

“I’d like to gather some half breeds to fight with Blaise’s vampires, if we can,” Luca said to Kana, a little shyly.

She raised an eyebrow. “Of course. I mean, you probably should ask Blaise.”
