We went deeper into the prison. The cells were empty, save for one where a woman sat curled up in the far corner on the cot. My heart leapt in my chest at the sight. It was her! Our mate! She looked so sad and lost that my anger boiled again. I detested Victor for making her feel so miserable. I would make him pay for such cruelty.

A part of me didn’t want to encounter Victor on this rescue mission, but another part of me hoped I would get to fight him again so I could right the wrong he had done to our mate.

“Hey, are you okay?” Gabriel’s voice was compassionate and soft. I would let him do the talking. He was better at comforting others.

The woman finally focused on us and gasped, shocked to see us on the other side of the bars. She got up and ran to the door just as I found the right key and opened her path to safety.

“You… you’re the ones I saw earlier…” Her voice was filled with wonder, as if she couldn’t believe we had returned for her.

“We came to save you. Are you alright? Did Victor or any of his people do anything to you?” Gabriel looked our mate up and down, fretting over her well-being.

I did the same thing, and I noted the bruises around her forearms. They had manhandled her badly enough to leave marks on her body. This discovery did nothing to calm my anger.

The woman bit her lip and looked down on the floor. “They wanted to… and Victor too… but nothing happened,” she said in a small voice.

“Fuck those bastards!” I cursed, realizing Victor and his goons must have threatened to assault our mate. She must have been terrified.

The woman looked at me and took a step back. My outburst had scared her.

“I’m sorry,” I put all my effort into calming myself down. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “The very thought of anybody threatening you makes me furious beyond belief.”

She didn’t reply, but her gaze was full of curiosity as she eyed me. She pulled her arms around herself. “You came to rescue me. Thank you.” She gave us a small smile, but she still looked tired and lost.

“Let’s get you out of here and to the safety of our sleuth,” Gabriel returned her expression. He smiled brightly, but he was tense; angry about what had happened to our mate, just like me.

“Where are you from?” The woman followed Gabriel. I decided to walk behind her, closing off our small column.

“The Santuario Sleuth. We live in a small village not far from here. I guess everywhere on the island is not far though,” Gabriel babbled, but I didn’t mind listening to his cheerful voice. The sound would give our mate a sense of safety and comfort.

We weren’t out of the facility yet. Until we fully left, we couldn’t relax but the woman needed some peace of mind after being kidnapped, manhandled, and threatened.

“The captain of the ship I came on said I should seek you out – that you’re the only good ones on this island,” our mate replied. My heart warmed at hearing that she had a good opinion of our sleuth.

“That would be us!” Gabriel replied.

“Will you let me live amongst you?” her question was so shy and cautious that my heart broke a little. It made me think of what she must have been through before coming to the island. Had she been thrown away by a clan, or had something hurt her even worse?

Again, I felt my rage only grow but I controlled that fire. I would use my fury to protect my mate, if such a need arose.

“Of course, we will. We saved you because we want you around,” Gabriel said.

“But you don’t even know me…”

“I’m Gabriel and that’s Esteban, and you are?”

“Daphne.”

Her name was as gorgeous as she herself. Daphne… the name of our mate. Perfect.

“So now we know each other but I will officially welcome you to the sleuth when we arrive at the village. Until then, stay close to us.” We exited the building to see our people shooting in the direction of Fort Torres. “It seems we’ve got a fight on our hands.”

Chapter Six

Gabriel

I gave Daphne and Esteban a signal with my hand to stay behind, and peaked around the wall in front of the prison facility. I saw Victor’s goons running from the direction of the castle. They had a place to hide if they decided to come closer – another fence which separated the prison grounds from the lands belonging to the castle. Meanwhile our people were hiding behind cars, shooting at the enemy with the purpose of scaring them away since Victor’s shifters were still too far for us to hit them.

I decided the situation was safe enough for Daphne to walk out. “Come on, let’s get you inside the car.”
