She shook her head and gave me a sweet smile. The gesture only made me more teary-eyed.

“We will come for you,” I promised.

Hanny nodded. “I know. I will be waiting.”

“This family reunion is beyond annoying. Men, open fire!” Victor commanded.

I pulled Daphne quickly into the passenger seat of our car. She yelped in surprise but didn’t resist. Quickly, gunfire rained on us.

“Get in the cars! We’re going back to Santuario!” I commanded using my Alpha voice.

I jumped into the front passenger seat while Esteban circled the car and got behind the wheel. Our people followed, entering their cars as Victor’s goons shot at us. Luckily these were bullet proof military vehicles, so once everyone was inside they were safe.

Ban pressed his feet on the gas, and we drove away as quickly as we could. The other cars followed us.

Victor hadn’t been smart enough to have his people block the road to Santuario, so we made our way home without problems. We drove as quickly as possible.

Once we were outside of Victor’s territory I breathed a sigh of relief.

“That woman… Who was she to you?” A small voice came from the back seat.

Daphne. My mate. She was finally safe, our mission a success. I had to be happy about that fact at least, even though the thought of my sister being captive overshadowed the joy of having this woman at my side.

“My sister, and Esteban’s cousin.” My voice wavered a bit, and I wiped away the stray tear from the corner of my eye. It wasn’t like me to weep, but seeing Hanny collared and pushed around had affected me deeply.

“I’m sorry,” Daphne whispered in a gentle voice.

“At least she’s alive. We believed her dead the past three years,” I said.

Even though Hanny must have had an awful life with Victor, her spirit wasn’t broken. I hoped once we got her to safety she would recover.

“We will need to go up against Victor to save her,” Esteban voiced my thoughts exactly. “But that’s a matter for another day. Right now I’m happy we rescued you, Daphne.”

“Thank you for coming for me.” Daphne’s reply was short, but I could hear the gratitude in her voice.

After that small exchange we drove to Santuario in silence, each of us deep in our own thoughts.

Today’s events had significantly changed many things for Esteban and me. We had met our mate and managed to rescue her from Victor’s clutches, and we had learned that Hanny was alive. I had wanted Victor dead for a long time, but now I possessed even more reasons to plan the villain’s demise. I had a lot of thinking to do in the coming week.

How could Santuario become strong enough to bring down Victor who had many more men than us? I didn’t know the answer yet, but I would figure out a solution soon.

However, my focus during the next few days needed to be on helping Daphne adapt to her new life. I also had to get her to mate with us. But her comfort came first.

Yes, today had marked a huge change in our lives, and I would make the best of what was to come.

Chapter Seven

Daphne

I had been saved and by none other than the two handsome men whom I had met earlier. From the way they spoke to the rest of the group I understood that they were Alphas. It was unusual for a sleuth to have two Alphas, but the phenomenon wasn’t completely unheard of.

I was now in the car with the two bear shifters, Gabriel and Esteban. We spoke briefly and I thanked them for the rescue, though I still didn’t understand why they had come for me. Sooner or later they would ask something of me in return; I was sure of that fact. Nothing in life was free, except maybe for pain. And I’d already experienced plenty of emotional anguish today.

I pushed aside the thought of repaying the two Alphas. The time would come to settle my debt later. Right now I was too tired to suffer another blow by learning what exactly I was supposed to give up to them in exchange for regaining safety.

We arrived at a high wall. Two guards opened the large gate, and we drove into a village. All the houses were terraced, sitting close to a tall hill on one side and near the wall encircling the settlement on the other. In the middle was a square with a well. We drove past the square to a garage, the other cars following us.

When Esteban parked the car inside the small building, we got out.
