“You deserved that!” Fabiana screamed.

Had I really deserved what had happened at the sleuth that day? I was the one who had asked Ban to let Fabiana join the clan. She had lied about running away from her family; claimed she wasn’t a criminal, just a poor girl who had been wronged. She had cried such believable tears that day.

She was beautiful and confident. I wanted to fuck her from the moment I met her. So my dick did the thinking for me that day. Ban had been reluctant to agree and we had fought, but he had let Fabiana join Santuario in the end.

Now that I had met Daphne though, I knew the attraction I had felt towards Fabiana paled in comparison to what a pull towards a mate was really like. With Fabiana, I had been blinded by her beauty and the sweet personality she showed me. Inside, though, she was rotten to the core; a disgusting liar.

Daphne, who was truly my mate, was nothing like her. From the moment I met her, I knew she was not only gorgeous but a genuinely good person as well. She would never try to manipulate me the way Fabiana had done to get the easiest jobs in the sleuth and all the best clothes and cosmetics.

In the time Daphne had spent at Santuario she had shown us that she wanted to work to be a part of the sleuth, and she had never asked for anything expensive. I had still bought new outfits for her though, which were due to come in two weeks. My mate deserved all the best things.

Daphne stiffened beside me when she heard my exchange with Fabiana. I took her hand in mine and squeezed gently.

“You don’t have to worry about her, Daphne. Being with Fabiana was a mistake, and as soon as I realized the truth, I ended our relationship,” I said softly.

Fabiana huffed. “What’s the meaning of this? Are you fucking that ugly girl now? How low have your standards fallen?”

I cringed, hearing her words. Daphne stiffened even more.

I locked my jaw. This spectacle wasn’t something I wanted my mate to witness. I needed to end this conflict quickly.

“Why are you here, Fabiana? We requested Victor’s presence. And he was supposed to bring Hanny with him,” I said.

Fabiana laughed with malice. “Victor saw right through your scheme. How stupid do you think he is? Obviously the day you give up your birthright will never come. You’re too stuck-up ever to leave the island.”

She was right, but we had hoped Victor would fall for our story. That plan now seemed to have been wishful thinking.

“Why send you though?” I continued. I was still curious why Fabiana in particular had been chosen.

“It’s so that I can get my revenge on you,” Fabiana smiled brightly, but her eyes remained cold. “Men, come out. Let’s have some fun.”

Her shift started, her bones relocating. The clothes she wore ripped as her body grew, changing to that of a sizable bear.

From around the bend behind Fabiana fifteen bears emerged, running our way at full speed.

“Everyone, shift to your animal forms! We have to fight!” Ban barked out the command in his Alpha voice.

I glanced at Daphne, and she nodded. She no longer seemed confused and lost – now steel was present in her eyes. She was ready for battle.

I started my shift, my clothes ripping, and I heard Daphne and Ban change their forms next to me. A few heartbeats later we each stood on the concrete road on four legs, our impressive bear forms ready for combat.

Our convenient placement was a good thing too, because Fabiana didn’t give even a moment to adjust to my transformation. She fell upon me, her claws digging into my right front leg. I groaned and scratched the front of her body with my own claws. Fabiana’s bear was smaller than mine, but the rest of Victor's goons ran up to us, joining the fight.

I made sure to block their access to Daphne with my body. She had just enough space to attack the one enemy in front of her. I wouldn’t let them surround her. I trusted she would be able to fight one enemy one-on-one, but I didn’t want her to get overwhelmed.

On her other side, Ban growled as he attacked two of Victor’s goons at once. His fury overtook him, the energy coming from the fact that he wanted to protect his mate.

Our men joined the fight now, fourteen bears against fifteen of Victor’s. At least today we were evenly-matched.

The rest of the fight became a blur as I swung my claws, biting into Fabiana and Victor’s goons. At some point Fabiana fell back, and I didn’t chase her. I wanted her to survive the fight. I wished for her to run to Victor with her tail between her legs and tell him how unreliable she was, having lost so many men in the fight with us.

None of us held back today. Our orders to our men were to kill. This was a war. The time for playing around was over.

When half of Victor’s bears had fallen, a growl erupted from Fabiana and her remaining forces started retreating. I gave a command not to chase after them. Everyone but Daphne knew the commands. Suddenly I noticed she was favoring her right front leg; her right one had a wound that seeped blood. Fuck.

Ban noticed too and wanted to chase after Victor’s men to get revenge for hurting our mate but I blocked his path. The fight was already over.

Bodies of half of Victor’s goons were sprawled on the ground, no longer breathing. I walked around the corpses and unfortunately discovered that two of our bears had been killed as well. Hanziel, a hunter, and… Engel was dead too. Adans stood by his best friend, tears falling from his eyes.
