At 2 pm we saw a ship coming towards the pier. I gestured for everyone to get ready. A few minutes later we saw two dozen of Victor’s men approaching the dock area. We waited until they were inside our firing range.

“Fire!” I issued the command, and the gunshots went flying.

Some of Victor’s goons managed to hide behind one of the buildings but many others fell, too surprised to know what had killed them. We continued to exchange fire with the ones who remained alive. Thankfully our hiding spots were much better than theirs.

Bullets flew, men screamed. It was a carnage. Eventually the few remaining enemies ran off back to their cars to flee.

“Follow them! Let no one escape!” I screamed.

We needed to secure their cars so we could transport the shipment, as well as their money so we could pay the traders. Besides, we were at war with Victor. I had no mercy for the criminals who followed him.

Our men ran after Victor’s, shooting at them until all dropped to the ground, dead. The fight was over.

Esteban, Daphne, and I emerged from our hiding spot. I walked around the fallen enemies, checking their pockets for keys and money. When I found what I was looking for, the ship had just docked. A gangplank was dropped, and an old man in a ship officer’s outfit came a few steps towards the pier.

I approached the captain who looked past me at all the dead men lying on the ground, equal parts curious and apprehensive. Daphne and Esteban followed right behind me.

The man’s gaze landed on Daphne. His eyes widened, surprised to see her, but there was a twinkle of recognition in his gaze too. “You’re still alive, girl! I’m glad you found your way to the Santuario clan.” He gave my mate a warm smile.

I looked between them curiously. Daphne smiled back, confirming that they must know each other.

“One way or another I did find what I was looking for with the Alphas of Santuario,” Daphne confirmed. “I’m glad you’re well too.”

“I’m glad as well to see you in such a healthy state.” The captain gestured to the carnage. “What happened here? I was expecting Victor’s men today.”

“A change of plans,” I answered instead, smiling. “I have the money though, and we will be taking the shipment for our purposes.”

The captain shrugged. “The politics of your island don’t interest me. As long as you have money, and I didn’t sail here for nothing, I’ll take what you’re giving.”

“I’m glad,” I replied. I handed the man the bag with money.

He looked inside and took out the banknotes, counting through them to see if everything was in order. Finally, he nodded. “Seems right.”

He gestured to the sailors, and they started carrying the cargo onto the pier.

“Esteban, bring the cars closer.” I gave the keys I had found to my partner.

Esteban walked away and brought the two delivery vans from Victor’s people closer to the pier. Getting two cars that were in good shape was lucky. I would hand one over to the Bloody Claws to tighten our alliance, but I would keep the other one. We only had seven cars for the eighty people in our sleuth, which wasn’t bad for our needs, but we could always use another.

Our people approached and carried the crates from the pier to the vans. I helped out as well. In no time we had everything loaded.

I noticed that Daphne had been chatting with the captain while the operation had taken place. When I approached them, she was smiling happily at the old man.

“Changes are coming to the island. Maybe in the future we will meet under less warlike circumstances,” she said.

The captain shook his silver-haired head. “I’ll believe it when I see it. Isla Paraiso will always be the prison island to me. Even if you turn it into a paradise, it will only be one for the people who belong here: the ex-criminals and their wardens.”

“We’re not planning to make it into a tourist resort but we’d like to have better lives for ourselves,” Daphne explained.

She looked animated, waving her hands around. She became this open and excited when she grew comfortable with another person. She must have seen the captain as a friend. I reminded myself to ask her about their relationship later.

Daphne continued speaking. “Soon we will know which side of the conflict will make Isla Paraiso into what they want it to be – Victor or us.”

“Either way you guys have been buying lots of ammunition and guns. Good for business.” The captain chuckled.

“If there’s peace, other goods will be sought after. I doubt your services will stop being in demand.”

“I suppose so. Unless you guys murder each other. With all of you dead, there will be no trade.”
