“Come over here and help me,” Ban’s voice in my head was strained.

I returned to my position at his side and saw Ban was favoring his right leg, a deep gushing wound on his left. Victor kept attacking him, not giving him a moment to rest. My fight with Fabiana had been a distraction to keep me from the real goal of ending Victor.

“I will let him maul me, and while he’s upon me, jump on him and try to bite through his artery,” Ban told me his plan.

I didn’t like this idea one bit. “So you want to be bait? What if he kills you before I can murder him?”

“There’s no time to waste, Gabriel. We’re getting weaker with every minute, and more and more tired from the fight. Our people are busy engaging his goons. We need to bring Victor down on our own, just you and I.”

He was right. The more we fought, the more fatigued we would continue to become and with Victor being strongerthan us, we would need a ploy to defeat him. That was why Ban’s plan wasn’t stupid; it was just too dangerous.

“I still don’t like it,” I complained.

I felt Ban’s annoyance through the connection. “I thought having the bond between us would be an improvement. That we could communicate more easily. But if it means you will start questioning my ideas, I will revert back to growling my commands at you.”

That attitude pissed me off more. “You make it sound like you’re the boss of me.”

“No, I’m your partner. And as your partner I’m asking you to fight together with me. Now will you do as I say, or do you have a better idea?”

I didn’t. So, as much as I hated the thought, I had to agree to do things Ban’s way. “Let’s do it.”

“Good, I’m glad you’re with me. Get ready.”

Ban launched himself at the underbelly of Victor, and the villain used that opportunity to collapse upon my partner with his much larger body. They rolled around, trying to bite each other to death. I looked carefully for the right opportunity, and when it presented itself I jumped upon Ban and Victor. I did my best to angle my head just right to be able to rip out Victor’s artery but my effort was no use. Victor knew better than to leave his neck undefended. He shook, trying to throw me off him.

This new situation was an opportunity in and of itself though. “Ban, rip out his throat while he’s focused on me.”

It was a change of plans. But Ban, who was under Victor, had better access to his weak point.

I focused on not being thrown off by the giant bear. I tried to pin his head in place.

Finally, a groan of agony erupted from Victor as Ban bit hard into his artery, ripping it open. Blood spurted everywhere, wetting Ban’s fur. A giant pool of blood appeared on the floor.

Victor’s body went limp. I scrambled off him. Ban threw the corpse off of himself and rolled out of the pool of blood. He looked awful, dirty as hell.

I growled as loudly as I could while standing on my hind legs. My partner followed my action. We quickly got the attention of everyone in the room. The other bears stopped fighting and stared in our direction and at Victor’s unmoving body next to us. A moment later, Victor’s goons laid their heads on the floor in submission.

The fight was over. We had won.

I shifted back to human form. Ban did the same, and our people followed our example when they noticed our transformation. Then the bears on Victor’s side shifted too.

“Your leader is dead,” I announced. “You will submit to Esteban and I as your Alphas or you will be imprisoned.”

The people fighting on Victor’s side, a dozen of which were still alive, knelt in front of us as one. Seeing so many naked people submit to us looked strange; alas, finding clothes for them was a matter which we could deal with later.

I glanced across the room to see Daphne smiling brightly at us.

“Are you hurt?” I sent her the question through the bond.

She was pressing a hand to her side. “Not deeply. It should heal in a week.”

I growled, displeased that she had been injured at all. When I came closer to her and took her hand away from her side, I saw the injury wasn’t bad thankfully. On a full bear shifter the wound would have healed in a day or two. Alas Daphne, being a half-breed, regained health slower than us. At least she wasn’t like a human, who would take weeks if not months to heal.

“See? Everything’s fine!” She leaned in closer to me and placed a soft kiss on my lips.

I sighed. I knew she was just trying to reassure me. Since it really wasn’t that bad of a wound, I let the topic drop.

“And you’re not sad at all that I’m hurt?” A whiny thought came from Ban.
