“Or else I would have known about it,” said Jenna. I could only guess that she was reliving things in her mind the same as I was.
Skylar continued, “And the two of you know each other…how?”
“From Bruin Valley,” I quickly answered. “Jenna and I go back to our college days in my hometown.”
“I see,” said Skylar, his eyes wavering between Jenna and me, obviously measuring her reactions to me. Or our reactions to each other. “Bruin Valley,” he said, sniffing at me, letting his instincts sort me out the way I did him. “So then, you’re…”
“Yes,” I said, anticipating him. “That makes two of us.”
Jenna gave a nervous little chuckle. The situation was now officially surprising and awkward for all three of us—one half-human, half-Ursan woman, the Ursan that she once loved—and the other Ursan who was her…”friend.”
I didn’t need my bear instincts to suss outexactly what was going on here. My human ones would do just fine. The one least surprised was me. I knew Jenna was here when Elizabeth invited me to this tenure party as her guest. Neither Jenna nor Skylar had seen me coming, so to speak. And Skylar was just as flat-pawed to find me here as I was to find him as her “friend.”
But now, here we all were.
“So,” Jenna said, composing herself. “A documentary filmmaker?”
“That’s right,” I replied.
“And you still live in Bruin Valley?”
“No, I moved away to start my career,” I said. “I’m kind of mobile now.”
She blinked at that, and for a moment was at a loss for words. “Really?” Jenna reacted. “I’d always thought…”
“I know. Things change,” I said.
The air was thick with the sheer irony of this moment, after all these years, and Skylar was the only one who wasn’t in on it.
He said, “I can see you two have some things to talk about.”
“Yeah, I think so,” I agreed.
Jenna took another sip of her champagne and smiled a bit, silently agreeing with that assessment. “Yes…I’d say we do.”
All in all, it was getting to be quite thelittle reunion.
