His expression turned serious. "Well, she just appeared out of nowhere. What do you know about her?" He continued.

"Not much. I haven't heard her life story or anything."

Doyle shook his head in disbelief. "That's no good, man. You need to get to know her. Damon and Blaise are already suspicious of strangers as it is, and strangers that linger make them even more suspicious."

I chuckled and took another sip of my beer. "This has been a weird week."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. Things have been crazy this week. I went to check on our friend this morning." He said, glancing around the room.

"Oh yeah? Find out anything interesting?" I asked, sitting forward in my chair.

"Nah. He's the strong silent type, but it doesn't matter to me either way. This idea that Blaise has about the new queen seems far-fetched at best."

I finished off my beer and set the glass down. "Yup, that's what I thought. I don't think that bitch ever existed in the first place. She could've been anyone, right? How can he be so sure that this guy knows who she is? She may not even know who she is."

Doyle nodded his agreement. "Exactly. I wouldn't put too much stock in it until we find her."

We both stared at the dance floor for a few minutes and then, Doyle spoke up again. "You know, I gotta go take care of something real quick. You wanna hang out here awhile longer?"

"No problem," I said with a nod.

My phone vibrated in my pocket and I pulled it out, seeing Scarlett's name on the screen. 'Where r u?'

'In the back of the bar.'

She sent back a picture of herself sitting alone at a table. I smiled and shook my head. "Have fun," I told her and returned my phone to my pocket.

Doyle returned a few minutes later with a scowl on his face.

"Alright, I should probably get going. Blaise wants to see me. I'll catch up with you later. Be safe out there."

I nodded and waved goodbye to him as he left the bar. When I stood up, Scarlett was walking toward me, looking confident and strong.

"Hey, how's it going'?"

Her expression brightened. "I'm doing good. You?" She asked, smiling brightly at me.

"Me? I'm actually alright. Where's your boyfriend?" I asked, looking around the bar for him.

"He's not my boyfriend, Drako."

"Well, he's not some random person like you said he was, and you still haven't explained what is going on or why you lied to me about knowing him."

She rolled her eyes. "Look, I told you, he's not my boyfriend. He's just a friend."

"A friend who followed you from wherever you were from for whatever reason? There are a lot of details missing in that story, but it's probably none of my business. We don't even really know each other. If it wasn't for the fact that your car broke down, you wouldn't have stopped in this town at all."

Scarlett sighed and began fidgeting with her hands. "Yes, well, thank you for being considerate of that. Grayson was someone I was with for a short time, but it didn't work out. I'm not sure why he followed me. I guess he thinks I'm too weak to care for myself."

"Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Why did you leave him?"

She looked down at her feet and I could tell she was struggling. "I'm not ready to talk about that yet."

"Fair enough," I said, nodding my head. "Where were you headed to anyway? Why would he think you would need protection?"

"I was supposed to be going to visit a friend in Moonridge. Grayson doesn't think I can check the mail without a bodyguard. I'm not sure he thinks I'm capable of doing anything on my own."

"That's ridiculous. Does he know you at all? I mean, I've only known you a few days, but it was long enough to see that you are more than capable of taking care of yourself."
