"Thank you," she said

"You want a ride to the motel? I've got to get home. I have to get up early in the morning."

"Sure, thanks."

I walked her to the door and opened it for her. "So, what do you say? Want to get together tomorrow and go for a walk or something? Maybe have lunch?"

"I'd love to." She smiled at me and slipped her arm through mine.

We talked for a while longer, enjoying the quiet night. The moonlight cast a pale glow over the street and the stars were beginning to appear overhead. I didn't mind the silence at all though because Scarlett was beautiful, and it was easy to look at her. After saying goodnight, I headed home.

The next afternoon, after another meeting with Blaise about Scarlett and her friend, I went to see Scarlett. Blaise's paranoia seemed to be at an all-time high. Nothing I said made any difference to him.

I knocked on Scarlett's door, ready to forget about everything else and focus on her. When the door swung open, I was surprised to see Grayson standing there. His jaw was clenched, and I could see him tense up the second he saw me.

"What do you want?" He growled through his teeth.

"Is Scarlett here?" I asked, trying my best to be polite.

"She's busy."

"Can I talk to her?"

"No."

"What's your problem, man?" I asked, keeping my hands balled up in fists.

"My problem is that I don't know who the hell you are or why you want Scarlett."

"I don't think that is any of your business. Scarlett is perfectly capable of making her own decisions. She doesn't need anybody to do her thinking for her."

His face turned red and the vein in his forehead protruded to the point that I thought it might burst.

"I didn't say that she did, but I don't trust you."

"Oh, no? And why is that?"

"Because you're a stranger and you know nothing about her life."

"Grayson!" Scarlett yelled, "that's enough."

He turned his attention back to me. He seemed angry and his blue eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Look," he said, "I'm not here to cause trouble. I just wanted to see whether Scarlett was alright, 'cause someone broke into her room a few nights ago. It seems like everything is fine though, so I'll leave you two alone."

He walked away and left us alone in the room in awkward silence.

Scarlett sat down on the bed next to me and sighed. "That wasn't very nice of him, was it?"

"No, it wasn't," I replied as I ran my fingers through her hair.

She smiled at me and then laid her head on my shoulder. We stayed silent for a long time before Scarlett spoke up again.

"Maybe we should go get something to eat," Scarlett suggested.

I nodded and stood up. "Yeah, let's."

We walked outside into the warm sunshine. The sky was covered with brilliant blue color. There was a gentle breeze blowing and it made the trees sway gently.

While we were walking, I noticed that I was still holding Scarlett's hand. I released it and put my arm around her shoulders instead.
