"There are pieces everywhere."

"Yes, there are," I said, looking down at the broken pieces. "I need to talk to you about your father. Can we sit down and talk?"

Scarlett swallowed hard, not meeting my eyes. "No."

"Why?"

"Because I don't care what it is he did. I don't need anything from either one of you so tell him-"

"We were attacked last night. Whoever was behind it took your father," I interrupted, holding up my hand, "I just have to figure out who it was. "

"Bullshit!" She scoffed, backing away from me. "His dragon has never lost a fight. He would never let himself get kidnapped. Get out of my apartment, Grayson."

She was right. As long as I have known Kane, he has always been one of the strongest shifters among us. His dragon was fierce and his enemies feared it, which made his abduction even more strange.

"He didn't shift. I was there, Scarlett. It's the truth," I responded with a sigh, "Despite our past, I have never lied to you and you know that. Why would I start now?"

"You're lying because-"

I cut her off, "And if you believe that then you're a bigger fool than I thought."

She pressed her lips together, anger flashing across her face. As she opened her mouth to speak, I reached out, capturing her jaw between my fingers.

"Stop talking, Scarlett. And listen." I spoke softly, eyes boring into hers.

"Don't touch me," she hissed.

"Then don't fight it. Just hear me out. We need to talk about your father."

She inhaled sharply and jerked her chin out of my grasp, eyes wide and furious. She had changed since the last time I had seen her; the night I had rejected her as my mate.

I knew I hurt her, but she wasn't the type of person I wanted. The night replayed in my head as it had so many times before. Her face filled with anger and sadness was tattooed in my brain.

"Get out," she said firmly.

"Scarlett, this is serious,"

"I realize that, Grayson. I need to get dressed. Get out."

I walked out of the bathroom and into the adjoining bedroom to wait for her. A minute later, she was fully clothed and drying her hair with the towel. The image of her naked was still floating around in my head as I watched her.

"It has to be them. Those bastards from Shadow Crest are behind this." She said, interrupting my train of thought.

"I don't know that for sure and neither do you."

She shook her head and threw her hands into the air, letting out a frustrated breath. "Fuck this. I'm done listening to you. I appreciate you telling me, but I've got to go."

Before I could say another word, she spun on her heels and headed straight for the front door.

"Scarlett," I warned, catching up to her. "Wait."

"Don't you fucking dare follow me," she spat, yanking the door open and walking out.

I rolled my eyes and pulled open the door, not caring about how much I was inconveniencing the neighbors. I followed behind her, my eyes glued to the back of her head.

The wind blew from every direction as the storm slowly rolled in. Scarlett's fiery red hair floated around her in the breeze, almost covering her petite frame.

"I'm not leaving until I talk to you," I stated, stopping next to her car. "Where are you going, Scarlett?"
