"To find my father," she replied without looking my way.

"You're not going by yourself."

Scarlett sighed heavily, and the sound sent a jolt of electricity through my body. Something was different.

"I'll be fine, Grayson." She said, getting into her car, "I don't need you."

"What if you're wrong? You'll waste all your time chasing the wrong people.”

I leaned against the hood of her car and crossed my arms. She was taking a huge risk, especially alone.

"Then why are you doing this?" I asked, keeping my voice low.

"Because he's the only family I have left," she answered simply. "I'm not going to let those assholes take him away from me too."

I nodded, knowing exactly what she meant. Her mother had been killed in an attack when we were kids. If I didn't stop her, she might end up the same way.

"Scarlett, you have no idea what you are getting yourself into," I said, reaching inside the car to grab her wrist. "Please listen to me. It's dangerous out there. People will hurt you. You don't know what you are doing. You won't be able to protect yourself and-"

"You should've stayed in the house where it was safe," she snapped, pulling her arm away from my grip.

I closed my eyes, biting my tongue. Damn it! She was still just as stubborn as she always was.

"Let me go, Grayson," she continued. "I don't need your help."

I gritted my teeth, resisting the urge to grab her again.

"Get out of my way," she demanded. "Or I swear to God, I will kill you."

I blinked a few times, stunned by her words. She was serious. Then, my eyes traveled to the dark clouds looming overhead. This was going to be bad.

"Fine," I said, stepping aside. "But if you get hurt, it's on your head."

"Good," she replied coolly and slammed the car door shut.

I watched her drive off, feeling helpless and irritated at the same time. I'd almost killed her at that moment. Maybe it was time to leave things alone. There wouldn't be any reason to keep her there any longer.

So, I walked to my car and drove back to the house. Despite my annoyance with her, I knew she needed me.

When I got back to the house, I went straight to my room and changed into fresh clothes. I put my old clothes in a trash bag and shoved the bag underneath my bed. When I finished, I grabbed my keys and headed downstairs. There was no other choice, I had to follow her.

Chapter Two

Scarlett

The sky had darkened by the time I arrived at the nearest gas station. I parked my car in the lot behind the pumps and got out. The wind whipped around me, making my hair fly wildly in the open windows. I rubbed my eyes, trying to focus my thoughts. I took a deep breath, letting it out slowly, and began walking toward the store.

I looked both ways before crossing the parking lot, my eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. I held my phone in my hand, ready to call Grayson if something happened.

I opened the doors of the store and pushed them closed behind me. I scanned the shelves carefully, looking for anything that might help, before moving to the counter.

I set down my purse and dug into the bag, pulling out my wallet, still holding the phone in my hand. As I stared at the small screen, a strange feeling came over me.

"Whoa," I whispered, my throat suddenly dry.

There was a text from Grayson.

"I'm sending you a map of the area, so you won't get lost. Stay away from the places I circled until we talk."
