"What the hell happened?" I asked.

She shook her head. "I don't know."

"How did you escape?" I asked.

"I can't explain it," she said. "But I know we need to leave. I think they know who we are."

Her words sent shockwaves through my mind. Did we need to leave? Was she right? Did they know who we were?

I looked back in the direction of the motel. Going back there may not be a good idea, but I couldn't come up with another option. I looked back at Scarlett, who was texting someone.

"What are you doing?" I asked, grabbing the phone from her hand.

The last text she sent was to Drako, asking him for help. I looked at her, stunned by her actions.

"What choice do we have, Grayson?"

"How do you know we can trust him?"

"I can't explain it. I just know."

Her phone vibrated in my hands. I looked at the screen and saw a text from Drako letting her know he was on his way.

Chapter Eleven

Scarlett

My body trembled as we waited in the shadows for Drako to arrive. The presence of the dark dragon left me terrified and unsure of where to turn. Grayson kept a close eye on me, worried about what might happen next. When Drako arrived, he was hesitant to go with him, but he did so to stay close to me.

The car ride to Drako's house was silent.

Grayson had no idea how I felt for Drako. He knew that I liked him, but it was more than just his handsome face or his strong arms around me. It was something deeper than that. There was something that told me I could trust him. He'd saved my life, and he'd done so without hesitation. I didn't know why I trusted him, only that it was true. I couldn't deny the bond between us, even though I would never admit it aloud.

I wondered whether Drako sensed our connection too. Did he feel it every time I looked at him? Would he ever act on it? It wasn't something I could explain to Grayson, considering our past. My feelings for him were just as strong as they ever were. It left me confused and unsure of what to do. Should I tell him how I truly felt? Or should I keep those thoughts locked up inside? Was this how it all started?

Drako pulled his car into a parking space in front of his home. We got out of the vehicle and headed toward the entrance.

The two-story house seemed far too big for just one person. It had a porch wrapped around it and a large yard that didn't look like it was used for much anymore.

"Are you okay?" He whispered as we approached the door.

I nodded my head but didn't speak. My head was still reeling from everything that had just happened

He reached for my hand as we walked through the foyer and into the kitchen.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"Scared," I answered honestly. "Everything is happening so fast."

"You have nothing to be afraid of," he said softly.

"No, I don't," I replied, surprised by the words that came out of my mouth. I turned away from him, not wanting to see his reaction.

Once we made it upstairs, we found the room where Drako lived. Inside, there was a large bed with black sheets and white pillows. A single framed picture hung on the wall, depicting a beautiful red-haired woman standing on top of a mountain. The picture looked familiar, but I couldn't place it. I sat down on the edge of the bed while Grayson stood near the window, searching for signs of the dragons who were looking for us.

Drako walked over to me and smiled warmly. His eyes twinkled like the stars in the sky.

"We'll be safe here tonight. You can rest easy knowing that."
