The message had come an hour ago, but I still felt a little uneasy. Why would he send me a map? What was he planning to do?

I stopped staring at my phone and shut off the screen, sliding it back into my pocket.

I gathered up everything and paid for my purchases, before heading to the gas pump. I used the nozzle to fill up both my tank and the extra gas can I kept in the trunk for emergencies.

After putting the can in the back of my car, I started the engine and headed out. Before I could pull out onto the highway, the phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Are you still there?" Grayson's voice crackled over the line.

"Yeah," I said.

"I didn't expect you to answer."

"Um...yeah, well..." My voice trailed off.

"Do you have a plan?" He asked, cutting right to the point.

I exhaled loudly and looked down at my hands.

"I don't think I have a choice," I admitted. "I guess I'll just have to go with the flow and see where it takes me."

"I'm not happy about it," he said quietly, "You need to get back here before you get yourself hurt."

"I'm not happy about this either, Grayson," I agreed, "but I have no choice. Don't worry about me. You fulfilled your obligation; you told me what happened. That's all I need from you."

"I wish you would just come home," he grumbled.

"I can't do that yet. I have to do this on my own. I promise I'll be careful."

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel as my stomach twisted into knots. I wasn't sure how long I could stay focused on driving, but I pushed the fear aside and kept my eyes forward.

"Keep your phone close," he said after a short pause, "Just in case."

"Okay."

The line clicked off abruptly and I sighed heavily, releasing the death grip I had on the steering wheel.

What was I doing? What if I got lost out there? How would I even find my dad's kidnappers?

I shook my head, refusing to think about it anymore. Instead, I focused on the road ahead.

I drove in silence for a while, until I heard a familiar song coming from my radio.

It was the same one that had been playing earlier tonight. The one that had made me run out of the house.

I pulled over and turned off the car, resting my forehead against the steering wheel. Why couldn't I shake the feeling that something bad was happening?

Why was I so drawn to Grayson?

Was it some kind of curse? Why was I destined to be with him out of all the people in the world?

I had to go. Now.

I pressed the button to turn my radio back on and the song I had heard earlier played. It was a slow ballad with soft, haunting lyrics. It sounded like it was sung by someone who had experienced the deepest darkness in life and somehow managed to survive.

I pulled my car back onto the road and sped up, beating the traffic lights. The sun was starting to peek through the clouds, casting an orange glow across the horizon. I had already driven for several hours, but I kept going. I had to find my father.
