"It's all right," Grayson said in a soothing tone. "There is no danger out there." He wrapped his arms around me more tightly than before and I relaxed. A minute or two passed before we spoke again.

"I can handle this, you know," I said softly. "You have nothing to worry about."

He smiled down at me. His blue eyes looked sad for some reason, though I didn't understand what could possibly make them look so sad. I kissed his jaw softly, knowing I needed him more than ever.

"Of course, I do," Grayson said after a moment, "but that doesn't mean I don't worry about you."

I gave him a small smile in return. I leaned closer to him and planted one on his lips, just once, just long enough for him to know how much I appreciated it before pulling away. I knew he must see the concern in my eyes, and I thought it best not to mention the events of the night before.

I watched him for a few moments longer than necessary. Grayson returned the gaze calmly, his hand resting protectively against my back. His eyes were full of concern for me, even if it wasn't clear exactly who they reflected his concern for. It made me feel loved.

I leaned forward and rested my forehead against his. For a while, we stood there, holding each other, neither of us speaking and neither of us needing to say anything. I closed my eyes and savored the feeling. It was almost as though everything that had happened was merely a bad dream. Everything I'd been worried about seemed so far away.

A sharp sound drew our attention away from each other and back toward the window. I looked outside just in time to see an enormous, winged creature fly low over the house. Grayson immediately pulled me into the living room and shut the curtains. The light flickered as he closed off the windows as well. He locked the door before returning to my side.

"Are you all right?" he asked in a soft voice.

I nodded silently as he pulled me into his arms again. We stayed like that until the light started to fade. Fear crept in and I wondered whether they had found us.

Drako walked into the room, checking to see how we were. "Is everything okay?"

"Something was outside the window," Grayson explained.

"That was just me," Drako replied, "I didn't mean to frighten you. I just wanted to make sure we weren't being watched.

"So you didn't see anyone out there?" Grayson asked.

Drako shook his head. "No. For now, we are okay. We just have to be careful and you two need to stay out of sight."

I nodded my head, still feeling shaken by the sight of Drako's dragon outside. It reminded me that he wasn't just a stranger that I met at a bar. He was our rival and as much as I wanted to trust him, I wasn't sure whether I should.

"We can't hide forever," Grayson said.

"I know. You won't have to. It is just until I can find out where her father is."

"You really think they are going to tell you where Kane is? Why haven't they told you already? Don't they trust you?"

"They used to. Now, I'm not so sure."

"Well, if they don't trust you, they aren't ever going to tell you anything."

Drako dropped down onto the sofa and let out a heavy sigh. "Then I am going to have to do whatever I can to make them trust me. It is the only chance we have of finding out where your father is, Scarlett."

Drako was right. There wasn't any other way to find out where my dad was without getting caught in the process. I had no other choice but to trust him. I had come too far to give up.

Chapter Fifteen

Drako

After an unexpected night, I found myself unsure of how to feel about things. Once the alcohol had worn off, I was worried about how Scarlett would feel about me. I tried to focus on other things, but she had become quieter than usual, which was making me wonder. On the other hand, Grayson seemed more relaxed about the whole situation. At least, it didn't feel like he hated me as much as before. I was lost in my thoughts when my phone rang, and I almost dropped it when I grabbed it from the table.

"Yo, Drako. Get ready. I'll pick you up in twenty minutes," Doyle said when I answered.

"For what?" I asked, glancing at Scarlett.

"A night with the boys," Doyle laughed.

"Okay. I'll get ready," I said then hung up the phone.
