I followed him inside the house, where Scarlett was waiting with a towel. She handed it to me, and I tried to dry myself off but I was still soaked. Drops of water fell from my hair and clothes. I excused myself so I could change.

"Drako, what happened to your face?" I asked when I returned, and I had finally looked at him.

"It's nothing. I tripped last night and embarrassed myself."

Scarlett shrugged her shoulders and then disappeared into the kitchen, allowing time for us to talk. There wasn't much Henry could tell me about who was at the door or why. It seemed like a wasted trip. One I didn't want to have to explain.

"I need to talk to you," Drako said, suddenly looking more nervous.

"About what?" I asked.

"Last night, Blaise had some kind of meeting. He said it was with the men who he trusted."

"Okay. Is that where you went?"

"Yeah."

"Maybe that means he trusts you."

"Maybe."

"Then what's the matter?"

"I didn't recognize any of those men, but they all seemed to agree with everything he said."

"What did he say? Anything about Kane?"

"He said Kane was refusing to talk about the new queen. He claims to have no knowledge of who she is."

"Maybe that is the truth. I've never heard him mention anything like that and Kane was never modest. If he stumbled across a secret like that, he would have let the world know that he knew."

"Even if it is the truth, Blaise isn't buying it. That means that we are going to have to move fast. I'm meeting with them again tonight so I can try to find out where Kane is. We are running out of time."

After dinner, Drako went to meet Doyle and Damon. It still wasn't clear to me what side Drako was on, but for the time being, I didn't see many options for us.

"Drako is making new friends," I said to Scarlett as we sat in the living room.

The sky outside the window was electric, and rolling thunder was still going strong. I wondered how long it would last.

"What do you mean?"

"They are obviously trying to make sure he is one of them. That's what last night was about; to remind him that he is one of them and not one of us."

Scarlett sighed. "I know. And now all they're going to do is hang around him and ask him questions. He's going to get sick of it."

We were sitting in our favorite armchairs watching the rain. It was pouring down outside. It was dark outside, but inside this house was warm with light coming from every doorway and window.

"Or he will answer them so he can prove his loyalty."

Scarlett glared at me and then turned away, her arms crossed.

There was silence for a while as we watched the storm. Finally, she said softly, "Do you really think he would do that to us?"

"I don't know but we can't pretend that it's not a possibility."

She turned back to look at me, a pained expression on her face. "He wouldn't turn on us like this. I know he wouldn't, right? Right?"

I nodded my head slowly, but I wasn't sure. It would be crazy to think he wouldn't save himself over us if given the choice. It would be easy for him since we are nothing to him except strangers he had crossed paths with.
