"They were ready to kill him a few days ago. Do you think…"

"He's alive, Scarlett. I know he's alive. He always finds a way to survive."

"I'm just scared that I won't get to see him again or get the chance to fix things between us."

"You will get the chance. That is all he has wanted for the last two years, and he is the most stubborn person I've ever met. He's not going to give up until he gets what he wants."

She forced a smile and nodded her head. I knew it was only for my benefit though. Her doubts were written all over her face. There was nothing I could say to change how she was feeling, as much as I wished I could. All I could do was make sure that no matter what happened, she made it out of this mess alive.

Chapter Twenty

Scarlett

The wind blew wildly against the old, abandoned building. Many of the windows were broken, yet inside there was no damage. It looked as if no one had been here for years. It wasn't the most ideal place, but it would keep us safe while Drakorecovered.

I watched silently as he sat on a bench, his back resting against the wall while he took deep breaths to calm himself down. I sat down next to him, listening to the storm outside. He didn't seem like someone who cared about nature or was cold. The only thing that seemed to be bothering him is what they did to him, which is why I knew we needed to find some way to make sure that didn’t happen again.

I sighed softly, placing my hand gently on his shoulder.

He turned his head slightly towards me, giving me a small grin before returning to his normal position and closing his eyes. I smiled at him before I pulled myself up to my feet. I started pacing around, hoping to tire myself out so that I could sleep peacefully. I walked through the room a few times, looking for anything that would help us, but there really was nothing.

‘We'll be fine.’ I thought, trying to reassure myself. ‘Drako will get better, and we'll be fine.’

Eventually, he spoke, breaking my concentration.

"What do you think we should do?"

I stopped pacing in front of him, looking at him in confusion. "Do? What are you talking about?"

Drako frowned slightly. "If we can save your father, how will we escape from this place?"

I looked into his eyes. They were tired and bloodshot, and he'd clearly been crying.

"We will escape." I said firmly. "That's not a question you need to ask."

Drakoraised an eyebrow at me. He shook his head. "No. It is a question." He paused, seeming unsure whether he should continue. He took a deep breath and continued. "If we can find a way to escape then... what?" He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "Do we just run for the rest of our lives?"

I sighed, shaking my head. I sat down beside him, looking out the window at the storm. I didn't have a response for him.

For a second, everything had felt quiet but now it was all too loud. A few birds flew past, calling out to each other, but all I heard was the thunder.

"We will figure it out. I promise." I said softly, hoping it was the truth. "It's going to be alright."

There was something in my chest telling me to believe those words. After what happened today, I was pretty sure it would never be ok again.

I heard a soft sob coming from Drako. He tried his best to wipe his eyes but failed. I put my arm around him, pulling him closer. "I know... trust me, we'll figure something out." He nodded, leaning into me. I closed my eyes, feeling him relax. I didn't want him to worry anymore, but at least, right now, I could protect him from the pain.

He let out an audible sigh as his breathing calmed down. "Thank you," he said quietly, turning towards me. I just gave him a soft smile before I returned my eyes to the window.

"It's okay," I replied simply, trying to hide how worried and anxious I actually was for him. This was a bad situation, and we all knew it. Even if I didn't say it aloud, that didn't mean I wasn't scared too. Drako’s voice caught me off-guard, so I turned my gaze back toward him quickly to see him staring at me intently with an emotionless expression.

"You can ask questions later. For now, let's get something to eat," he added calmly.

"I'll go," Grayson said, "It's not safe for you."

Drako nodded his head hesitantly and sat back against the wall. His human form showed no signs of the injuries that his dragon had sustained, but I knew it would take time for him to heal. Unfortunately, time was something that we didn't have, and I knew I had to act fast.

There were still so many concerns surrounding us.
