Drako scoffed. "Easy for her?! You're telling me that the most powerful Dragon Slayer on the continent isn't even going to slay the dragon?"

He then sighed, shaking his head. "She must kill him. The Dark One will always come back for her. She won't be safe as long as he is alive."

He then turned away from us. "Now if you excuse me, I need to make sure she is alright."

He turned his eyes toward the sky and began to walk away from us. Before we could react, he had already flown away. We ran after him, trying to catch up with him, when we got close, the darkness swallowed Samuel whole, leaving behind nothing but an empty lot.

He left us standing there, staring at each other. After a few moments, Drako spoke up.

"So… What now?"

"We need to find Scarlett."

Drako nodded his head, and we took off in the direction of the house. My muscles burned as we ran, and every breath felt as if I was inhaling needles. I tried not to focus on my anger and frustration over the situation. If I focused on those things, I'd just drive myself crazy and I could never get anywhere with this. Besides, there had to be another reason for all this pain and suffering. There had to be some kind of meaning behind it.

I continued running forward, ignoring the burning pain in my limbs and my body begging me to stop. As we ran, we kept looking around, trying to spot anything. The sun slowly moved closer to the horizon. I couldn't believe so much had happened in such a short amount of time. It almost made me forget about how close we had come to dying earlier in the battle. When my thoughts came rushing back into my mind, I tried to push those thoughts to the side. If I focused on that, I'd never get anything done. I pushed on through the grass and trees.

When I saw the large white house, it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, almost relieving me of the weight on my chest, but my relief was short lived. I slowed to a jog as I approached the house. Drako stopped beside me, panting heavily.

We walked up to the door and knocked softly on it. Silence greeted us. Drako glanced down at me and nodded his head towards the door.

I walked past him and knocked again. Still silence.

Drako looked around cautiously and then whispered, "Let's check around back."

I nodded my head and followed his lead. After we rounded a corner, we found the backyard, which connected to a wooded area. Standing behind a tree, was Kane watching the terrifying scene playing out in front of him. We silently made our way towards him, staying hidden, waiting for him to look at us. He eventually raised his head and we quickly stepped out of sight.

"What happened?" Drako demanded.

Kane glanced between me and Drako and spoke in a quiet tone, "He found her."

We followed his gaze and saw Scarlett standing in front of Blaise. Her eyes were fixed on him as he transformed into his dragon form. They were filled with fear and confusion. I couldn't hear their conversation because I was so far away, but I could tell Blaise was threatening her.

"Do something!" Drako pleaded, "We need her alive."

He ignored him and continued speaking in a calm voice. I could feel Drako’s desperation rising, almost boiling, as Scarlett kept refusing to submit to Blaise. I couldn't blame him; she was my best friend. I couldn't stand to watch it happen and neither could Drako or Kane.

"We are just going to have to trust her. We can't fight this battle for her."

Chapter Twenty-Six

Scarlett

I watched as he shifted into his dragon. That's when I knew it was true. He was the Dark One. My heart started racing and my mind was spinning. He stood towering over me, ready to strike. I looked behind him at the two Shadow Dragons ready to die for him.

They have watched intently, waiting for his orders. In the distance, I could see my father, weak, worried, and still in human form. That could only mean that his dragon was hurt badly. There was no more time to waste. I couldn't put it off any longer. If I did, they would kill both of us. I shifted into my dragon just as Grayson and Drako approached my father.

I felt a wave of relief, knowing that they were safe and turned my attention to the Dark One. We stared each other down, neither backing away. A part of me thought this would be the end and a part of me wasn't sure if that was what I really wanted. I didn't know how long we stayed like that, glaring at one another until finally, the dragon spoke.

"You are the Queen!" he said, pleased with himself for figuring out my identity, "Together we can rule the dragons."

"I have chosen my mates," I replied, glancing towards Grayson and Drako. They nodded their heads, indicating that they were okay with our agreement.

"Then it shall be so!" The dragon declared, extending his talons to the side. Suddenly my world disappeared. All sound, all sight and feeling, everything around me vanished. Everything had been sucked out of existence. For the briefest of moments, I found myself looking through an abyss. It stretched on for ages before ending abruptly at a point I couldn't see. Before I realized it, I felt myself being pulled back towards reality once more. As soon as my eyes focused again, I found myself back in my own body, staring up into the face of the dragon who'd been causing my nightmares since day one. His expression was unreadable, but something about his gaze told me that he knew something was up.

His shadow magic was stronger than I had anticipated but I quickly snapped back into reality. With a quick swipe from the claws, he destroyed the barrier between us. I fell backwards, landing hard on the ground, coughing violently, trying to get some air back into my lungs. When I was able to catch my breath again, I took a few deep breaths and tried to calm my nerves. This wasn’t going the way I'd planned it. The dragon crouched in front of me, studying my reaction closely, clearly trying to figure out if I should try something new or not. My father had warned me not to provoke anyone else. I needed information on who he is, how he got here, and most importantly; what was my power. My ability to manipulate shadows has always been an ability I've never used in battle and the fact that I'd been able to fight him off with only a few scratches was unsettling. I was lucky that I hadn't lost too much blood, but my injuries definitely weren't going to heal easily. Still, I was the Queen of the dragons. I wouldn't give up yet.

"What do you want?" I asked, forcing myself to stand. My body felt sore and weak, but I wasn't going to let that stop me.
