I gave her a quick peck and a wink before opening the door and stepping outside.

I didn't want to lose sight of her. There was something very dangerous lurking around the corner waiting to snatch her away again and that scared me.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind swept past me causing the hem of my shirt to flutter. Goosebumps formed all along my skin, as a shiver ran throughout my spine. Without thinking twice, I spun around and searched the dark forest. It was eerily silent and empty. No birds singing their songs of joy to greet the springtime morning. Not even the faint sound of the water trickling through the streams was present.

I could sense it. Someone or something was watching us. Something evil. I turned to look at her and smiled.

"What are you smiling about?" she asked, raising her brow in question.

I smiled, "Just being silly, I suppose."

She chuckled. I took her hand in mine, pulling her back towards me. I pressed a small kiss against her forehead, taking in the smell that filled my nostrils. It smelled of fresh grass and wildflowers. It felt so familiar.

"Let's go," I said before leading her to Kane and Drako. They were sitting next to each other waiting for us to catch up with them. Once we were in front of them, Kane's eyes lit up, while Drako looked surprised.

"So where were you two hiding all this time?" Drako asked jokingly.

I chuckled and shrugged my shoulders. "Around."

"That is not the answer I was expecting, Grayson."

"Well...we just needed to get some things cleared up."

Kane frowned. "Things like what?"

"It doesn't matter right now, Kane. We're all okay now."

Drako’s eyes flickered between both of us. His eyes lingered at our intertwined hands, and he smiled.

"Alright then. Let's get going!"

"My car should still be parked in the woods near the motel where I hid it. We need to leave as soon as possible."

He nodded his head as I turned my attention to Scarlett. "Are you ready for this?"

She gazed back at me, nodding her head. "Ready as I'll ever be."

After leaving the abandoned building, Drako led us the rest of the way to the motel. When we reached the car, I glanced once more at the forest as we passed through its gates, and I couldn't help feeling as though someonewas following us. Who was it? Who was trailing us? Could it be... the Shadow Dragons? I thought about tellingDrako about it, but stopped myself. I couldn't. I didn't want him to worry. After his betrayal, he was the one in the most danger as long as we were in Shadow Crest. It didn't matter whether it was a Shadow Dragon that was following us or not. I had to stay on guard.

I got in the driverseat, putting the key in the ignition. As I switched the engine on, I turned my attention back and forth between the road, which I already knew how to drive well enough, and the woods beyond the windows. I was hoping whoever it was would show themselves again so I wouldn't have to spend too long staring out of them, waiting for them to show themselves so I could finally know exactly what was happening. If it was them, I was prepared to do whatever it took to kill them. I didn’t care how long it took. I was not about to let them hurt her again.

When the car started to move slowly down the path, I pulled my eyes away from the window and focused on driving. I heard a small gasp come out of Scarlett's mouth before she started moving closer to the window. She must have seen the person following us.

I turned on the windshield wipers and wiped the foggy glass clear of my reflection. My heart pounded loudly in my chest when I spotted what seemed to be a man walking straight in my direction. His body was completely hidden in the shadows, but his silhouette was definitely visible.

His figure suddenly disappeared as a flash of white erupted. The light came crashing down onto the ground. I watched as the man fell lifeless to the floor. I kept my grip on the steering wheel tight as the adrenaline rushed through my blood.

I looked over at Scarlet and saw her glowing eyes as they changed back to their usual emerald color. She smiled at the look of confusion on my face.

"I told you," she said with a mischievous smile, "if they come after us, I'll make sure they regret it."

I glanced at the backseat, where Drako and Kane sat with smiles on their faces. Our queen was quickly becoming more confident in her magic. A wave of relief swept through me as we drove out of Shadow Crest. For the first time in a long time, I had a sense that everything would be okay as long as we were together.

As we exited the main road, we sped past a large park, where the cars were lined up in neat rows. My eyes flickered in front of me, and I noticed that a couple had parked on the side of the road. The couple appeared to be having quite the argument. The man pointed angrily at his phone while the woman attempted to reach out and grab his phone off him repeatedly.

As the traffic thinned out, I sped up, trying to put as much distance between us and Shadow Crest as I could. We may not have been sure about where we were headed but we were ready to face whatever came next together.
