"Because she needs it."

"Yeah, well, I don't trust outsiders and neither does Blaise. So, why don't you just leave her alone?"

"I'm going to talk to her tomorrow morning. I'm not leaving her alone."

"Fine, whatever." He rolled his eyes. "Goodnight."

I nodded and went back to my house to get ready for bed. I lay awake in the darkness for hours trying to figure out how to approach her. I knew that if I didn't come across as someone she could trust, then she would never open up to me. I had to prove to her that I could be trusted. I wasn't about to let her go.

When morning came, I woke up earlier than normal and decided to go see Scarlett. I knocked on her door and she opened it almost instantly. She looked like she hadn't slept all night. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she was wearing the same clothes she had on yesterday.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing," she said as she stepped aside. "Come inside."

I followed her and closed the door behind me. The smell of coffee filled my nostrils as I made my way to the kitchen table. She poured two cups of coffee and handed one to me. "Thank you," I said as I took it from her.

Scarlett looked confused. "For what?"

"For the coffee," I replied. "It smells wonderful."

She smiled and nodded. "Thanks." She sat down across from me and sipped her cup.

I took a sip of mine and sighed as the warmth spread through my body. "So, what's going on?"

"I can't sleep. Something keeps waking me up."

"Do you have any idea what it is?"

"Not really, but it feels like someone is watching me."

"You mean in your dreams?

"Maybe," she answered. "But I don't think so. It seems more real. Like someone is standing outside my door."

I frowned. "Are you sure it isn't just your imagination?"

"Of course not! What kind of question is that?"

I sat there quietly for a minute. I felt bad for her. This was bothering her. "I'll keep an eye out and see if I notice anyone suspicious."

"Thanks," She set her coffee down and leaned forward. "I guess being in a new town has got me on edge. Can you please take me to the auto shop? I want to find out what is going on with my car."

"Sure thing," I answered.

Scarlett stood up and took her cup to the sink. "You're a lifesaver." She winked.

"I'm just glad I could help."

"Oh, wow. You're so sweet!" She grinned. "It's nice to meet a gentleman who doesn't mind taking care of a damsel in distress."

I chuckled and shook my head. "Hey, I'm not helpless. Just because I'm good-looking doesn't mean I can't handle myself."

Scarlett smirked. "I'm sure you can. And I appreciate it."

"Don't mention it."

The auto shop was in a strip mall less than a mile from the motel. The place looked pretty old and worn out. We parked and headed inside. Damon was a large man with thick arms and a bald head. He came out and greeted us. He wore grease-stained overalls and had a cigarette in his mouth.
